6bit Posted August 17, 2018 Share #21  Posted August 17, 2018 Advertisement (gone after registration) And when I’m shooting starfields, I hate waiting twice the multiple-minute exposure time to see my results. Change the firmware to allow disabling Long Exposure Noise Reduction (LENR), and treat us like mature professionals who can make our own decisions. Again, this isn’t rocket science. My EOS 5D mk IV allows this, but I’d really like to use low-coma Leica glass for night sky shooting. I agree with you. Also, Canon LENR doesn’t take the length of the exposure like Leica does. Canon has a faster implementation that works well.
Advertisement Posted August 17, 2018 Posted August 17, 2018 Hi 6bit, Take a look here Next generation SL2 hardware. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
lx1713 Posted August 19, 2018 Share #22  Posted August 19, 2018 (edited) I would like a hardware toggle (like the Nikon cameras D5, D850, D750 switch at the shutter button) at the shutter button where I can quickly switch on and off the after shot image review which appears whenever the shutter button is kept depressed after taking a shot. Preferably spring loaded rather than a fixed setting because it's rare that I need it. A short clockwise rotation to switch off image preview and maybe add a short anti-clockwise rotation to center the focusing point.  I thought to add this here. In hope  Of course, Leica is likely to come with a better solution but the Nikon at-the-shutter-button switch is one of their nicest ergonomic touches I wish every camera had. bencychin Posted August 23, 2018 Share #23 Â Posted August 23, 2018 I am really looking forward to Leica SL2. As i remember, it is said to be more ergonomically designed, less bulky, and i hope it can be lighter. Â This urge is triggered by the launch of Nikon mirroless Z7 today. The new Nikon mirroless Z7 - is very simiilar in physical dimensions to SL. Nikon Z7: 134 x 101 x 68; 675 gm (imcl.battery). Leica SL: 147 x 104 x 39; 847 gm (incl.battery). Â Nikon is thicker perhaps due to 5axis IBIS. Leica unlikely since it has stabilization in lens. Â Still I hope to see good competition from SL2. Interesting development Nikon’s Z6 and 7 models and very attractive road map plus lens adapter for almost all F mount optics. This is going to put real cat among the pigeons now, no doubt Canon will respond. As much as image quality from SL and dedicated and legacy lenses is superb competitive pressure will increase. Lizard skin and no marking special editions may earn some extra revenue by enabling old product to be sold at a premium but are not way forward to address long term viability.  One dimensional correction; Factoring SL’s VF and handgrip depth is closer to 85+mm, I measured it.  I am sure we will read in coming days how Leica is a small business and don’t have capacity to develop multiple cameras like Nikon but the truth is no full frame camera could exceed Leica S 37mp count yet. S line is holding back SL while medium format competition is probably already aiming for 100mp.

frame-it Posted August 23, 2018 Share #28 Â Posted August 23, 2018 i don't think leica feels any pressure from canon, nikon, sony or pentax.
mmradman Posted August 23, 2018 Share #29  Posted August 23, 2018 i don't think leica feels any pressure from canon, nikon, sony or pentax. As long as people keep buying "P" versions of M cameras at substantial markup and exotic lenses like Noctilux 75mm no need to feel the pressure. Having said that no business can afford to sit idle.
LD_50 Posted August 24, 2018 Share #30  Posted August 24, 2018 (edited) Just buy what you like. I don’t understand all the business advice posts here for Leica. They clearly know better than everyone here what they can afford to invest and the expected returns.  The business is about returns and not chasing competitors with different capabilities. Chasing Sony would be a clear and quick path to failure. What exactly could they do better at Sony’s pace and price and scale?  The SL is better today than when I bought it. It was and is priced exactly where Leica chooses it to be. It’s neither over or under priced unless Leica decides it to be. It’s not overpriced for me but I would gladly spend less on Leica gear. lx1713 Posted August 29, 2018 Share #31 Â Posted August 29, 2018 If I remember correctly, the original Leitz cameras went toe to toe with large format and medium format cameras of their days and held their own and even survived. Not everything needs to be about chasing the competition's better features.
lx1713 Posted August 29, 2018 Share #32  Posted August 29, 2018 (edited) Real competition would be 16 bit files, leaf shutter lenses, on camera variable neutral density the sensor level, on the fly process and uploading of RAW files to JPG files conversion to social media, RAW video, etc  Something that makes me really competitive. Operational Range, Speed and Mobility. If I have to manpack the batteries needed I probably will. And I don't mind spending the dollars to achieve the time and workflow savings.  I think 24mp is good for most purposes already.
