Buy a used SL, give yourself a few weeks to get an understanding of the various menu settings. I was quiclky sold after a little playing. If you don't get a relationship with the SL, you can sell the body (essentially) without loss of money.

I think you will enjoy the SL!

And yes, SL2 will come, but not in 2018, I guess.

You could always counter the weight of the 24-90 with an optional grip. A lighter SL2 (~600g) would be ideal with M glass and the new Crons as well.

I've the grip. Surprisingly, I very much prefer the SL with the RRS L plate. I came from Canon 1D bodies so the weight is the same but the balance and ergonomics of the 1D is superior by far compared to the SL with the grip. With the grip, I can't last 3 hours and I've been carrying  Canon 1Ds with a heavier load for 8-12 hour stretches for decades.

It's such that I would rather a variant of the SL add just a couple of centimetres to the height than add the grip.

The RRS L plate serves that purpose well but if Leica stuffs a large battery reserve and build in the Arca Swiss QR form factor and a larger rear LCD panel (for video) I will be ecstatic. The SL isn't perfect for me but it has the pedigree to go farther still. I like the promise of "more elegant"

You have to consider what you are waiting for ..... 36+mpx and a slightly better sensor is quite likely .... a more rounded shape which may look smaller but in reality be very similar in size and weight .... possibly better and faster AF, an outside chance of OIS.

Most likely the Q2 will the tone for what to expect with regards to the number of MP and image stabilization.

I also expect the changes to be very incremental (like the S006 and the TL2) with mostly under the hood improvements.  36+ MP would already be a big jump IMO for Leica but it is always possible...

Sadly I believe you are right about IBIS (assuming you mean IBIS instead of OIS) which probably would make me personally reconsider the SL.  If Leica does not get to it with the SL2 it will be another 5 years before they get to it...

Today most camera makers do not develop & produce their own sensors although the specifications can be customized. Therefore the MP of SL 2 is market dependent at the point in time on what is available. As for the AF capability & other electronics hardware, just look at Panasonic G9 specifications and you have a good idea on what to expect from SL2. With Panasonic as development partner, Leica certainly do not need 5 years timeline. Edited by sillbeers15

Indeed, no SL2 in 2018. this has been confirmed by 2 reliable sources to me (one from Wetzlar).

Get a second hand SL and use it.

Thanks for the inside info... ;)

A Q might come, or at least to be announced, in 2018. Personally, I am more curious about the S-system. Whereas an SL2 would be welcomed by many, the S-system needs a step-up to meet the sensor/processor/technological development over the past years, and also to respond to the (relatively) recent - and quite successful - Hasselblad and Fuji MF offerings. If the past is taken as a guidance of the future, the new S (announced in 2018?, entering the shops in late 2018/early 2019?) may show what to expect in the new SL (late 2019/early 2020?).

And just to make it clear, the above are guesstimates, with no support from reliable sources within or outside of Wetzlar...

Before the SL2, we need to see first a new S with the Maestro 3 Processor inside!

Only a new processor justifies a new Q, so I think our eyes must be go to the new S and what comes new inside it.

I wonder if there's a case to be made for a 2018 launch of a cine line of the SL, like what canon did for their EF lenses. Those are certainly priced higher.

A better analogy might be a video-focused SL, similar to the GH-5 or the SONY S models.  Better codecs and lens firmware to make the setting changes run silent.  4:2:2 ProRes to the chip in camera,  Both chips offering UHS II.  But not a big MPx increase, which could be left to the S follow-on.

Yes and video guys are not as shocked by the price of the camera that can deliver all these features in a body the size of an SL (I suspect it will be bigger in hand though because of the connectors we will want).

I have not had any heating issues nor problems with the SL but my clips are a short 5 - 20 seconds but lots of it  :) . Not enough for the SL to break into a sweat.

I've run into the 29 minute shutdown on several occasions before I understood it.  Since I don't want to go to the data rates and data volumes that come with shooting into an HDMI recorder just to eliminate the 29 minute effect, I've gone to external audio recording to tie everything together and get rid of the little clicks and glitches that camera adjustments add to the sound track.  Fixing some of these little problems in a video-oriented SLs would be attractive.

The next step is RAW recording for video. The new BlackMagic Pocket has a neat solution: you can attach any USB3 external drive for (almost) unlimited recording.

In my dreams, I see Leica offering a grip for the SL that provides proper audio input, a larger battery (S-sized), an M.2 SSD slot, and attachments for 15mm rods...
