I was told by a guide that each is pruned to look this way, but I found it incredulous that millions of trees were all so carefully managed. A little research indicated that they were bred this way. On the way from Montepulciano to our Cortona hotel. With a Q from a moving bus.

I like it too...set in it's (seemingly) desolation.

 

As you say, it's natural. They grow over the world...Mum has several. In fact conifers generally don't like any pruning.

 

Haha...one has to wonder about tour guides. ;)
