Large shoulder bag for an SL, 24-90, 50 1.4 and Accessories

I'm looking for a premium bag for my Leica SL kit. I already own an Oberwerth Freiberg (I actually own two and am selling one) for my Leica Q and like it a lot. 

For my SL, I will be carrying a body with 24-90 lens, a 50mm F/1.4 SL a flash and some accessories. I will take my Think Tank backpack when I need my 90-280.

 

I'm looking at a Billingham 307/307L, Fogg Baby Grand 13 or E-Flat, or an Oberwerth Munchen.

 

What do you think? (besides I have several hundred $$ burning a hole in my pocket) Lol

Brad I use the Tenba Cooper 13 slim. There is also a slightly larger 15 I believe. Both would work well.

I’ve been using a Frankie Falcon bag by Ming Thein for the SL, 24-90, 50, and 90-280. Nice bag that is well designed. I am not sure if they are still available.

I just received my Wotancraft Trooper in size medium and it's a very lovely thing. The medium might be too small for the kit you want to carry. It will take the camera with one of the lenses attached and the other lens as well, but there won't be much room for anything else (I have the 50SL and a much smaller Zeiss 35mm 1.4 so I can judge the space). The large would be a better bet if you want to fit the camera, both lenses as well as a bunch of other things like an iPad, headphones, phone, etc.

 

Wotancraft is quite distinctive in their style and design and might be a bit 'marmite', which in case you're not British means you either love them or hate them but they are very good quality.

I have both the Billingham and the Peak Design Everyday Messager and since getting the Peak Design have not used the Billingham.

The 307 will work really well with that combination. When I had an SL and the 24-90 for the 24-hour try-out (it was more like 48 hours), I carried it around in a 307 along with a couple of M lenses, and the whole package was fairly comfortable to carry. You can do a few different configurations of the interior with the standard inserts. It's very weather-resistant, and the pop-open top makes it easy to work out of. It will relieve you of most of that money that's causing all the problems, but it will last a long time.

 

The 307L is made a little taller to accomodate a laptop. The 307 will take a tab-thingy in the flat rear pocket.

Please also consider the Oberwerth William. This should easily fit your kit. For me it holds the SL + 24-90 (verversed hood) + 90-280 (reversed hood) + flash or M-lens. I had to order special dividers that allow for a quick change of the configuration to hold both combinations of SL + lens nicely. There is still massive room for accessories in the front pockets. The Porto will most likely be oversized for you.

I use a Fogg b-major for SL, 24-90 and 90-280, with reversed hoods. If I have to I can get a slim lens in the front pocket (it was a Thambar yesterday), and there's space for a flash, but then it needs extra padding to stop items rubbing together.

This is a bit of a squeeze, but it works for transportation, and I don't like a bigger bag than I need. In use at an event the SL and a lens is in my hand, so the bag is much less heavy.

90-280 in lower part, hood reversed. The padded flap makes it easy to protect it from the camera/lens above, while still making it possible to extract. Keeping the wider (hood) end in the exposed bit means the camera above naturally sits on the padded bit, so they don't come in contact during a normal carry.

 

Closed for carrying. In this shot there is a Thambar (not visible) in the outer pocket.

 

This is a heavy bundle to carry, but the Fogg strap is broad and goes beneath the whole bag for security. In use, of course, the camera and one zoom are in my hand, so it is less of a burden on my shoulder.

Please have a look at Channel Modern.  Neal makes the most exquisite bags, all hand sewn without machine tools, even bespoke to your specifications.  They are very premium products and therefore priced as such, but this reflects the intensive manual labor that he puts into making these bags and cases.  He has made me many bags over the years - almost every item in available inventory, actually.  I use the Roller XL, the Aubrey Admiralty, and Mainsail for my SL system.  I can attest his products are of the highest quality, very unique, and will give you great pride of ownership and enjoyment.

some other things. Both are very useful - the Oberwerth is superior in elegance - the Retrospective can take more and can be carried across the belly - which is not possible with the Oberwerth - at least for me.

By across belly, do you mean with strap across your chest? If so, why not with Porto..... strap too short or some other issue?

I also in the market for a big shoulder bag to carry: SL + 24-90 + 90-280 + Canon 11-24 + M + Noctilux + tablet. I am undecided between the Billingham 445 and 555, they both have the option of using back pack harness.

Yes, the strap is too short.

A fellow I spoke with in a Leica store is 6 feet, one inch and 215 lb, and said he didn’t have an issue with strap fully extended. But of course we’re all different. His favorite, though, is the Billingham Eventer.
