A male Northern Shoveler is visiting our lake on its migration north. It is so named because of the large bill that is wide at the end for scooping up food. I'm told they have the nickname, "Hollywood," because of their showy appearance.

Duck hunting was all the rage in South Dakota while I was growing up in the late fifties and early sixties. We called Shovelers spoonies or spoonbills and considered them unfit for human consumption. Probably another prejudice without merit. Your photograph is great and they are a beautiful duck.
