Advertisement Posted March 4, 2018 Posted March 4, 2018 Hi IkarusJohn, Take a look here M-A has poor engraving on top plate. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
M.RB Posted March 5, 2018 Share #42 Posted March 5, 2018 I sent my M-A to Leica because the chrome seemed very soft and also the top plate engraving wasn’t uniform. I'm curious as to what 'soft' chrome was? What was the original problem? How did the 'softness' of the chrome manifest and how was the original engraving lacking in uniformity? wattsy Posted March 5, 2018 Share #43 Posted March 5, 2018 Soft chrome is a bit like buttery smooth. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
earleygallery Posted March 5, 2018 Share #44 Posted March 5, 2018 It sounds rather like there was nothing really wrong with it at all........

ShivaYash Posted March 7, 2018 Author Share #46 Posted March 7, 2018 I'm curious as to what 'soft' chrome was? What was the original problem? How did the 'softness' of the chrome manifest and how was the original engraving lacking in uniformity? Chrome is sold as a hard wearing finish, yet on my initial top plate, it was basically falling off. My chrome M6, which has seen some serious use, still looks clean and solid. I was asked to send it back, they agreed with me, this finish wasn’t right. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

ianman Posted March 8, 2018 Share #49 Posted March 8, 2018 Got my camera back from Leica today. The M-A has a new top plate. The serial number engraving looks a little off to me. The first digit spacing seems disconnected from the rest... but otherwise it looks good. Am I being pedantic? Comments welcome. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Seems like the kerning problem is not new... and doesn't worry some people, as this is currently at 180.000€ (excluding the min. of 20% fees & taxes)
wattsy Posted March 8, 2018 Share #50 Posted March 8, 2018 It's interesting how the M-A typeface, which until now I'd considered a model of unfussy elegance, suddenly looks rather angular and mannered compared with the even cleaner looking M2 typeface. It's especially noticeable on the shutter speed dial which, on the M-A, is beginning to look a little cluttered in comparison to the M2 one. ianman Posted March 8, 2018 Share #52 Posted March 8, 2018 On the M2 and, to a certain extend on the M-A, it looks like there is a deliberate spacing (x xxx xxx). I have to say, I much prefer the font on the top plate of the M2.
ianman Posted March 8, 2018 Share #53 Posted March 8, 2018 It seems clear that the spacing was deliberate in the past...
wizard Posted March 8, 2018 Share #54 Posted March 8, 2018 I’ve asked for the old top cover back... let’s see if they oblige me. I’m thinking legally it’s mine. Need to have a think about this. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk You will get the old top cover back if you ask for it. However, in case it carries a serial number, Leica will cross that serial number out mechanically, as they do not want top covers with serial numbers ending up somewhere else. Happened to me when I had them install a new top cover on my M3 several years ago. Cheers, Andy

If you paid Leica to replace a top plate I would expect to have the old one returned to me, as it would be my property. Replacement under warranty at their expese makes the top plate their property. Also, as it seemed to suffer from a very unusual fault, I'm sure Leica would want to examine it closely to determine the cause of the chrome falling off. Michael Geschlecht Posted March 8, 2018 Share #56 Posted March 8, 2018 (edited) Hello Everybody, Good morning sleepy heads. The older "M" cameras had the serial numbers separated slightly in groups of 3. The "snugging up" of the serial numbers appears to begin with the introduction of the M5 when the serial number moved from the front of the top plate to the (A first for Leitz.) hot shoe which replaced the "cold shoe" found on earlier "M" cameras.). The change over from the rounder to the more angular numbers probably occurred 20 or more years ago. a.noctilux Posted March 8, 2018 Share #58 Posted March 8, 2018 Time changes things . With this three generations of Leica M, in this image (show in many posts already, sorry), we can see that M4 has the slight spaces (x xxx xxx) MP and M-A have none space in numbers
