Hello everybody,

I just recently offered my M 50 Summilux 6 bit chrome version in nearly mint condition including box and papers to my dealer for a purchase of Leica binoculars in return- My dealer offered € 1800,- for the lens. I have to admit that I am a bit disappointed.

Does anyone of you guys think that this is a reasonable price ?

Thank  you for your Comments

The current price for a 50/1.4 Summilux-M asph is € 3,400 but I note that Richard Caplan is offering a used one for € 2150 so on that basis € 1800 for a four year old one in good condition seems about right to me bearing in mind that the dealer needs to make a profit to stay in business.  In this instance he would be making around 15% before any discounting, which doesn't seem excessive although it's out of your pocket of course.

I expect that selling your lens privately would get you a better price but then you'd be taking the associated risks on payment and buyer's satisfaction etc.

Pete.

Trade-in will always bring a disappointingly low offer – often way below expectations. Far better IMO to sell via a dealer with commission deduction (15-20% in London). Then no worries about customer comeback if you sold privately.

Have you tried the buy and sell section of the Leica forum?

Prices have risen considerably, also used prices. I think that you should be able to get at least 2150 EUR from a dealer. If you sell privatly, 20% higher prices may be possible.

I think you need to realize you are nothing more than a wholesaler when you play trade-in with dealers, who need to turn your item around for a profit. You’ll never do as well as just selling the item yourself. Time is the trade-off. Trade in now for less, or sell it yourself for more, but have to wait for that right buyer. Edited by Gregm61

It comes down the the AF or Aggravation Factor....

Give it to the dealer and be done with it...

Sell it yourself and watch out for complaints, failure to pay or demands of a refund if lens is not as described...

Is the 15% loss worth the additional hassle?

Only you can decide...

If a used "X" sells for around 65-70% the price of a  new "X" expect around 30-35% of the cost of a new "X" as what the dealer will offer for trade-in.

Why so little?  (1.)  Selling used gear is where the dealer makes the most money.  The mark-up on new camera gear is razor thin.  (2.) The dealer is taking a risk - the traded in item may sell in a month or it may sit in his glass case for years.  The longer a trade-in item sits in the glass case, the less the dealer's profit on that item.  Time is money in retail - the quicker an item sells, the better for the dealer.

Only the seller can decide if trading in "X" for less money to get a quicker transaction on the new item they want/need is a good deal for them.  Unless your trade-in item is exceedingly rare, expect a lowball trade-in offer.

I think that's the right price for a dealer. He will sell it at € 2.500 and will have his profit.

If I want to have a profit selling a lens I'm not going to sell it to a dealer or a pawn shop.

I'm going to sell it to somebody that will buy it for his personal use and not to sell it in his shop.

What binoculars are you getting – the Noctivid? I'll be interested to hear how you find them.

Oh come on. Dealers are not just stuffing cash in their pockets. You may sell an item at a good price and never have to deal with it again but as has been mentioned in the tread sales can go wrong.

You know many dealers driving around in a Bentley or Rolls Royce?

The dealer I use avoids trade-ins and tells me to sell privately - he gives me a good new price, with minimal markup.

Selling here works well, if you factor in the PayPal margin you still get a better price.  I've sold quite a l to privately with no hassle, other than sending the lens or camera off.
