Hi guys,

My M10 only few weeks old, the first problem appeared 2 days ago when I mounted 35mm, the framelines that it supposed light up for 35mm became unclear, it seemed like all lines coming out but almost dotted. Then I change with 50mm and 28mm, it came back normal including 35mm line, it appear normal again.

Yesterday afternoon, when I changed my lens again to 50mm from 28mm, the line for 50mm became unclear just like 35mm did. Then I tried fiddle around with frameline selector, it did worked, but the line for 35mm is missing. I mounted 35mm but the frameline appear is still 50mm.

Anyone have experience this before? It sucks that I’m on vacation right now, is there Leica service around Melbourne? Please help!

Is your. Lens clicking in place?

Yes...I'd try twisting your lens a little once mounted.

...

Do they appear when you actuate the lever? With no lens attached you can see what moves inside the body. Perhaps that is not aligning properly with your any lens.

I did, I try mounted and unmounted with 28, 35, 50, I try with no lens mounted too. The lever of frame selector don’t display for 35mm, only 28mm and 50mm.

Went to camera clinic, they said must send to Germany. I guess I’m the first with this problem

Sorry to hear that.

Actually this is my second M10, my first one worked flawlessly, I just traded because of the color, I prefer black ;(

Well, at least it’s not a big issue, I still can use 28mm and 50mm on the camera while on vacation.

Thanks for the help!

You are not the first with this problem, although you may be the first on an M10. The frame lines are selected mechanically, and problems like this have been occurring sporadically (but rarely) since 1954.

Your problem seems to resemble one I had on my first M10, which was caused by a sticky frame line lever.  As soon as my local Leica store saw it, they took the wonky M10, which was several months old by then, and handed me a new M10, no questions asked (another testament to the excellent customer service at Leica stores).

Mine was sticking on the 50 and 90 settings - and the selector lever on the front came loose. Initially I thought the sticking was possibly caused by the 'leather' body covering not being fully pushed down around where the shaft comes out through the body shell. This was not the problem - but you should at least check.

Subsequently I removed the lever again and put two 'tiny' drops of lubricant (ACF50 not WD40!) where the moving (inner) shaft comes through the fixed outer collar - applied with the lubricant on the tip of a toothpick. This instantly resolved my problem and I've had no further issues. You might also apply a tiny drop of Locktite blue (not red!) to the thread of the lever hold-down screw to prevent future loosening/falling off when reassembling. I hope this may help you.

I'm sure Henri C-B would have probably just used some olive oil whilst sitting at a café to achieve the same result... good luck.

Out of curiosity is your frame lever sticky in any position with lens mounted?

No, my lever is perfect, it moves freely as it should, that’s why I think it should be look by Leica service instead I took action on my own.

My first silver M10 is a bit sticky though but no problem whatsoever.

My biggest concern now is my thought about the camera that will be send to Germany, I’m worried about the handling and such that might cause something bad to the camera cosmetically or internally in the future. Wish they could tell me it easily done between 2-3 days, I’ll take the camera myself to Japan, the guy at Camera Clinic told me that Germany, Japan and USA have the tool to do the opening.

I had an issue with the frame line selector. too. I could push it in place, but that was not how it was designed ... Went to Wetzlar and left me eight weeks without the M10. Apparently they did the ISO 400 fix as well.

Don't worry.. I have had many things sent back to Germany over the years including routine CLAs without any issue. Just pack it carefully in the Leica box..

  • 2 weeks later...

I think I should update on this issue.

So once I was back from my vacation, I returned the camera to my dealer, spent the night only to get a phone call from my dealer early in the morning said that the camera was normal, what the heck..., I drove it there and checking that was indeed back to normal.

The guy only tried to mount his 35cron and the frameline is came back, I tried to mount my 35lux then 50cron back and forth, it has no issue at all. So I don’t know what was the cause of the frameline went missing. I hope it didn’t happen again in the future.
