BobinBoulder Posted December 19, 2017 Share #1 Posted December 19, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) I am a firm believer of getting some use out of my M10. Having had m6's for a number of years, I know that these things are built to last, and minor knicks and scratches just don't bother me. As a matter of fact, I relished the brassing that showed beneath the paint on the edges of some of my older cameras. They were "love marks" so far as I was concerned. The problem I've always had, however, is this. I'll throw my camera in any pocket, bag, backpack or just around my neck and shoulders, an not worry about the camera or the lens getting damaged, but the front lens ELEMENT gets quite dirty, dusty and is a collection of gunk after this kind of hauling around. So my question is this: Is there a cover, just for the lens, to protect it and keep it clean, when tossed in a bag or something similar? I'm thinking maybe a "neoprene lens sock" or something that slips over the lens (hood included), is stretchy, flexible and easy to put on and remove. Has anyone see something like this or made something like this?

a.noctilux Posted December 19, 2017 Share #2 Posted December 19, 2017 (edited) I use Leica or whatever brand neoprene case for lens AND body Ms. Like this one : https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/461922-USA/Leica_14867_Neoprene_Case_with_Short.html Long or short lens type to choose from. Other photographic brands have more choices than Leica. Edited December 19, 2017 by a.noctilux
BobinBoulder Posted December 19, 2017 Author Share #3 Posted December 19, 2017 I was thinking something more like these, actually. http://www.lenscoat.com/hoodie-lens-caps-c-5.html
a.noctilux Posted December 19, 2017 Share #4 Posted December 19, 2017 With shorty Leica M lens, it would not stay put. Those are good for long lenses, maybe if you use 2.8/135mm Elmarit-M (err no I forgot about the goggles).
Adam K Posted December 19, 2017 Share #5 Posted December 19, 2017 The latest generation of U.V. filters seem to work well as a 'transparent lens cap' as the coatings are hydrophobic, water and dust seem to fall off quite readily, or can be brushed off without the risk of damaging the front element. I'm sorry if this opens the 'can of worms' regarding the use of clear filters... I also usually use a lens hood to keep the worst of the grime away from the lens. The neoprene 'onesie' is also useful.
derleicaman Posted December 20, 2017 Share #6 Posted December 20, 2017 I found some specialty coozies made for Red Bull cans. They fit most M lenses "like a glove". Regular beer coozies will work for bigger lenses or SLR lenses.
250swb Posted December 20, 2017 Share #7 Posted December 20, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) If you don't want to go down the 'never-ready' route use a UV filter, or you could use that thing that comes with the lens, what's it called, sort of round black plastic....? Lol. Clever... Those plastic thingies hardly ever stretch over my lens hoods.
tobey bilek Posted December 20, 2017 Share #9 Posted December 20, 2017 Back in the day, my dealer sold stretchy caps for wide lenses. My wife made some for me. Use Ultra swede material and 3/4 in elastic. Cut a circle and sew elastic STRETCHED to edge of your circle . It forms a cup with elastic lip. Easy on and off. Ultra swede is heavy fairly stiff material.

enboe Posted December 23, 2017 Share #12 Posted December 23, 2017 For me, it's UVa Type II + a 1 gallon zip lock bag stuffed into the back pocket of my trousers in case it starts raining. The new Type 2 Leica UVa filters have the best measured light transmission of all at 99% per LensRentals laboratory tests, and my experience with them bears this out.

I welded a pocket shut on a pair of wranglers when I forgot the zip lock bag before sending to the cleaners.
Rob L Posted December 23, 2017 Share #14 Posted December 23, 2017 There are several. Optech "Hood Hat" Micro works great on M lenses if you use a hood. Otherwise the would likely fall off. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/buy/Lens-Hood-Accessories/ci/14665/N/4077634524?origSearch=Hood+Hat
BobinBoulder Posted January 22, 2018 Author Share #15 Posted January 22, 2018 Ended up getting the second smallest of the lenscoat.com products and LOVE these little devils. On and off with no problems (even while wearing a lenshood) on all of my lenses ranging from 28mm to 90mm. The only one it didn't fit was the old 135mm with "googles" but that's just an odd lens anyway. Tied it the strap with a nice little piece of black leather, so it's always with the camera and I am good to go! HIGHLY encourage you to check these out. For the price they can't be beat, and with a nice leather case on the camera, I'm now confident that my shooter is protected on on most fronts.
