I kept that measurement for suspense ;)

M-A Black Chrome : 33.72mm

As I said: fingerprint !

You have both silver and black chrome M-As? I have a black chrome M-A and have been thinking about getting the silver chrome too, but thought that might be a little crazy. But now I feel like I can justify it :)

 No, you have nothing to justify.

If you want/need those, why not.

If possessing those don't strip off your family's needs/wants, why not.

May I suggest that someone (or many more) "justify" (or collect ?) dozen(s) of Leica and even don't use them.

... my two M bodies' top caps, M-A and M10, both are 33.6 mm.

Assuming Olaf's measurement of his M-A is correct ...

I might be off by one or two tenths of a millimeter, as my caliper is of the cheap kind.

M-A silver chrome 33.83 mm at "i" of top Leica logo

M-A black chrome 33.72 mm

MP 33.6 mm

Got my caliper: M6, 33.4 mm. MP, 34.1 mm.

Or in each M, this "fine measurement" is fingerprint of this particular M.

Yes, I guess that's it. Each top cap is individually milled and polished from a solid block of brass. So even when the parts are interchangable (i. e. same measurements on the inside), their thicknesses may vary, hence different outer measurements. However, I am surprised about the wide variance reported here ... within one model line—say, MP/M-A—I'd expect differences of maybe one or two tenths of a millimeter, tops. But then, maybe different people handle their tape measures or calipers differently. Two people coming up with three different results after measuring the same thing is not unheard of.

Agreed, I also measured a black paint MP and it was 33.8. My caliper isn’t great either! However, the difference of just under a millimetre of my M6 and MP *is* noticeable in practice, to me at least (albeit nothing compared to the extra girth of the M 240). The lower weight of the M6 is probably a factor too of course.

One more boring observation - the VF/RF windows of my M6 are more inset than the MP, even though I’d read that the M6 itself was significantly “improved” in this respect compared to the early Ms.

Hello Everybody,

Please keep in mind that the thickness of the body overall is not that critical.

The critical dimension is the 27.8mm from the face of the lens mount to the the image capture device. Whether it is a piece of film or a digital sensor.

This is individually adjusted for in each M body. Whether film or digital.

Best Regards,

Michael

Hello Andy,

The M6 windows were not that much "improved" from the nifty little frames on an M3 which both: Helped to keep fingers from smudging the glass. And: Helped divert unexpected impact from the glass surfaces. Sort of like a lens hood is often more useful for preventing unwanted impact then it for reducing unwanted flare.

Best Regards,

Michael

Yes good points - the benefit I’d read about was that the newer, flush, windows were less likely to gather dust and dirt etc in their edges.

Hello Andy,

Yes, that is correct. They did say that. Sort of like saying: If you take the seat belts out of cars then there will not be the bother of maintaining them..

Best Regards,

Michael

When those flush windows need cleaning, simpler to wipe with a tissue (for example) than M3's.
