If you want/need those, why not. If possessing those don't strip off your family's needs/wants, why not. I might be off by one or two tenths of a millimeter, as my caliper is of the cheap kind. M-A silver chrome 33.83 mm at "i" of top Leica logo M-A black chrome 33.72 mm MP 33.6 mm Got my caliper: M6, 33.4 mm. MP, 34.1 mm. Or in each M, this "fine measurement" is fingerprint of this particular M. Yes, I guess that's it. Each top cap is individually milled and polished from a solid block of brass. So even when the parts are interchangable (i. e. same measurements on the inside), their thicknesses may vary, hence different outer measurements. However, I am surprised about the wide variance reported here ... within one model line—say, MP/M-A—I'd expect differences of maybe one or two tenths of a millimeter, tops. But then, maybe different people handle their tape measures or calipers differently. Two people coming up with three different results after measuring the same thing is not unheard of. However, the difference of just under a millimetre of my M6 and MP *is* noticeable in practice, to me at least (albeit nothing compared to the extra girth of the M 240). The critical dimension is the 27.8mm from the face of the lens mount to the the image capture device. Whether it is a piece of film or a digital sensor. And: Helped divert unexpected impact from the glass surfaces. Sort of like a lens hood is often more useful for preventing unwanted impact then it for reducing unwanted flare.
