swatch Posted November 11, 2017 Share #1  Posted November 11, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) May I have advice on which one to pick from below two options base on image quality ( sharpness / light falloff on corners / resistance to flare / colour  ) on B&W film as well on M9.  #11606 - Elmarit-M 28mm f/2.8 ASPH ( with regular plastic hood ) #11809 - Elmarit-M 28mm f/2.8 ( filter size 46mm / 4th version before #11606 was introduced )  Size is not a main concern as I will use external viewfinder to frame when taking picture.  For price, #11809 is about 20% cheaper in 2nd hand market here that should image quality is similar or close in performance then I will pick the cheaper one.  Thank you for sharing your experience  swatch
Advertisement Posted November 11, 2017 Posted November 11, 2017 Hi swatch, Take a look here 11606 or 11809. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
lct Posted November 11, 2017 Share #2 Â Posted November 11, 2017 Welcome to the forum Same sharpness more or less in the centre of the frame but the asph is sharper in borders and corners below f/5.6. It has also less vignetting but CA is lower on the pre-asph. The asph is also more contrasty generally which can be a problem on film or if you shoot OoC jpegs. My experience with the pre-asph is very limited though so take what i say with as much salt as your doctor allows
luigi bertolotti Posted November 11, 2017 Share #3  Posted November 11, 2017 Opposite to lct, I have no experience with the asph, and wide with the pre-asph (3 in 25 years... v1 v3 v4) , and the last is by sure the best (hood someway too big, if I can find a small defect...but you use the external VF...) : but asph (I never tried) is the last and superseded it.... seems to me difficult that Leica hasn't improved a so important focal... someone, indeed, has reported that it's someway too contrast... a lens for "modern taste"... but you know that Leica passionates have often some touch of nostalgy... In day to day use you will appreciate having less viewfinder blockage. This alone is worth the 20% difference in price.
enboe Posted November 11, 2017 Share #5 Â Posted November 11, 2017 Definitely the ASPH over the version 4. Â Sharper, smaller, 6-bit coded from the beginning, plastic hood doesn't intrude much into the frame lines, I really like that lens. Â The newer ASPH-II is even a tad sharper, but the hood is larger too.
farnz Posted November 11, 2017 Share #6 Â Posted November 11, 2017 The 28/2.8 Elmarit-M asph is too contrasty for my taste although an excellent, tiny lens, which I used for 5 years (my taste changed). Â I prefer the look of pictures taken with lenses designed by Walter Mandler so I would choose the pre-asph Mk IV. Â For the criteria that you set out I think the aspherical is the lens for you.
