Bill W Posted December 26, 2017 Share #242 Posted December 26, 2017 Neil, First impressions: New learning experience. I downloaded the user manual to my laptop a week ago and had been going through all of it a little at a time. I am one who needs the camera to reinforce what I am reading and of course did not have it till this morning. After getting Alice's new iphoneX set up, I was able to do some serious exploring for a few hours and went over the user manual again with the camera. I did some test shots which of course are nothing to look at but I am somewhat comfortable with it. I did my first software update and have the latest version that came out on 12/20. I will say it is different from my Leica's but it will be fun to walk around with. It is unbelievably light compared to either the S or SL. I tried ISO 6400 and it is not too bad. The colors are spot on and pleasing. Alice still hates my using her as a test subject but that has never changed. We are headed out to Marfa TX tomorrow morning and I hope to use it as much as I can the next three days.
tom0511 Posted December 26, 2017 Share #243 Posted December 26, 2017 I try to avoid switching systems bac and forth since I have lost too much money and never really gained that much. Using all Leica cameras gives the (theoretic) advantage of switching lenses between the systems. S lenses on the SL or M lenses on the SL etc. etc. I really do like the S system and lenses a lot. The one and only area where I could get tempted by the x1 is size/weight. I like being outdoors and bringing the S with 3 lenses is quite a package, and its also catching some attention. Since I also own xpan lenses the new adapter doesnt make it easier to resist. Still I would/will not sell my S and lenses and I will still try to resist the x1d. But the size....(of the lenses)... Tom I have been looking, looking and looking at many X1D pictures over the last week and have yet to see anything that is like WOW WOW WOW I need that. Gordon has got some amazing pictures and also Peter over on the GETDPI website but there are also a bunch of garbage, similar to what we see on the S image thread..........some are amazing and the rest are so so...mine included.......equipment sure helps but its the guy holding the camera and pressing the shutter that make the picture :) As for taking the S with 3 lenses, I used to do that Tom, but I have now decided to take just my 120mm and my 70 mm and leave the 30mm at home. If that combination works for a few trips I will sell the 30mm (I think they are going for 1500 to 2k) right now which would be a deposit on a XCD lens......I'm only going to have two of those too 90 and 45mm I have a S to V adapter at home so if I know I need something long then I will make a point of taking my Hasselblad 250 Super Combat with me..........love that lens Neil

Nobody hardly notices my X1d in the field except for other photographers who know what it is, which is rare. Being so compact, it blends in the crowd which is pretty cool for a medium format. But if I go out with something like a Canon 5dm3, which I got rid of, THAT gets noticed. Can slip the X1d into a small bag and it disappears. If had to do over, I might go for the all black version. That would be more stealth. Can take it anywhere, and conceivably be with me always.....but isn’t. The idea of carrying that expensive of gear all the time keeps me from doing that. But, could.

Belle Nice to hear that you are enjoying your X1D.........I'm to getting a silver one as I just don't see the point of paying an extra 2k for a paint job that could /can be done for the cost of a 20 dollar can of matt black paint from Halfords :) As for walking about with an expensive camera..........I guess thats a personal thing, for me I like to flaunt it Neil

I noticed they now sell the black as an option without the kit, but still at a ridiculous price difference. Flaunting is a personal choice. Why I don’t drive a Rolls Royce (kidding of course). There are no dealers for service visits in the sticks, anyway.
tom0511 Posted December 26, 2017 Share #249 Posted December 26, 2017 How much better-in your experience- is the IQ of a X1D over a M10+good lens (APO50 for example). The x1d is smaller than the S but the M10 is even quit a bit smaller (specially lenses) than the x1d. Happy Holydays, Tom

The x1d is smaller than the S but the M10 is even quit a bit smaller (specially lenses) than the x1d. Happy Holydays, Tom First, all M lenses are good lenses . I shoot 35mm and medium format with the X1d being my first digital medium format, because I could afford it. It doesn’t replace my M246 or my Q. The images you get out of the X1d are incredibly good in my opinion. Very rich in detail and best color I have experienced. Before the X1d, I shot almost exclusively b/w, but the X1d has gotten me to like color surprisingly, due to color detail and range. Now with the electronic shutter, and ability to use M or R glass, I have yet to do much comparison but will, now that my time is opened up a bit. I don’t expect to use the full image out of the X1d, but cropped with M glass, but it just might be more detailed, bigger file, than my M. My initial first test shots were good but not great, but really didn’t give it much effort. But, have to say much easier just using my M with M glass, and the Xcd lenses are excellent so far, so don’t really see myself using m glass on the xcd unless I just want a certain look, or for speed. But back to your question, I think to compare experience in IQ between 35mm and medium format is apples and oranges. Is going to be different. Is medium format better in IQ? In my opinion, it is. What we should be comparing is medium format to medium format.

Guest Posted December 28, 2017 Share #254 Posted December 28, 2017 Not black paint ... black anodized finish ... tough ... better than anything I had from Leica ... nothing after 6 months shows any wear ... so if you want brassing ... do not buy this. Belle123 Posted December 29, 2017 Share #255 Posted December 29, 2017 Just updating from previous post. Did some further testing of the X1d using my ancient R lens, a 50mm Summicron of 70s vintage. It’s old, rickety, fungus, etc., but still performs wonderfully. Using the new adapter for M lens to X1d, stacked with M to R adapter to this lens. Then set up my M 246 with Summicron M 50mm v4, which in the past I found performed almost identically against the sister R lens, except R lens allows much closer focus. Took several shots using tripod. Each shot at f2, focusing on same spot. ISO on X1d set to 100, and M was at minimum ISO of 320. Then in post processing just made conversion to b/w on X1d images. The X1d just barely edged out as better. Extremely close. But just a tiny bit more detail. This actually, for me, says just how good the 246 is. The other thing it told me, those older R lenses are EXCELLENT on the X1d! Only small amount of vignetting that can be removed in post processing, so cropping not needed.
IkarusJohn Posted December 29, 2017 Share #256 Posted December 29, 2017 (edited) Interesting to see this thread come to life. If I was coming new to digital, the X1Dwould definitely appeal. But, I’m heavily invested in 35mm and if there’s anything I need to improve on with my photography, moving to MF won’t fix it. The SL system is so good, and compatibility with M lenses provides options that the X1D won’t have for decades. It was that realisation which made me cancel my order in the first place. Just what options are you referring to? Decades is a long time. Of course, most likely if something you want isn’t on it now, might be “never” ha! But there may be in next generations, X2d....X3d.....

tom0511 Posted January 1, 2018 Share #259 Posted January 1, 2018 Very interesting to read about the M246 vs the X1D. I have been shooting the S for some years now but lately I am turned off a bit by the size / weight specially of the lenses. Also smaller cameras have become better-if I see what I can get from the SL it is not that bad either, even though I allways have loved the files from the S and still believe MF has some special "mojo". I am not sure though how much comes from the lens and how much from the bigger sensor. Mayn write the x1d lenses are very good but the S lenses are supposed to be better. Specially in regards of creamy bokeh. If we leave pure resolution out of the game, is it still worth to carry MF format gear? In theory I would guess no, but then specially in regards of color I sometimes believe maybe yes. Neil-did you step into the x1 system? Any thoughts compared to the S?
