The 1986 vintage manual focus Canon FD 800/5.6 in the hide … fitted to Leica T but the sequence was taken with the SL 601. The mating mallards were approx  60m from the hide … photos have been cropped . I don't mind using MF lenses so the vintage Canon suits me fine and its £750 s/h price is a bargain.  A new Canon EF AF 800mm lens would have cost over 16x the price. If a Sigma 800mm AF prime lens is made available in SL fitting it would probably cost over £4K. The Sigma AF 300-800mm retails at over £6K .

Best wishes

Well caught.  Every time we've seen birds mate the act was over exceptionally quickly, so the photographer must be fast.  Seeing the mating dance just ahead of time and reacting was a good move.  The last photo makes me think of seeing green sea turtle mating in the Galapagos, an act that sometimes drowns the female.

Not an inspiring photo; we liberated from a relative's attic my late father-in-law's 1970s photo gear and there amongst it was a Meyer-Optik Görlitz Orestegor 300/4 in M42 mount - a lens I'd never heard of. It weighs 2.1 kilos, is 24cms long with the jammed-on hood, takes a 100mm filter and the closest focussing distance seems to be about 10'. It is NOT a pleasure to handle 😀 - a tripod is essential, so it's good that it has its own adjustable tripod mount.  It's not in bad shape, though it does seem to have some fungus. The pictures seem to be not at all bad - decent sharpness and good colour, with nice subject separation wide-open.

SL with Orestegor 300/4, wide-open.

Red Kite perched on a disused mast photographed from the cabin at Swaddywell Nature Reserve near Peterborough UK … photographed 30 December from distance of approx 200m.  Silver birch tree branches in front of the mast and bird contribute to the soft focus on a very windy afternoon.

SL 601 / Canon FD 800/5.6 L manual focus lens with FD 1.4x extender and heavily cropped.
