SL2 body speculation (now that the SL has seen a price cut)

I guess most people agree that the SL is already a pretty good camera which covers most circumstantial functionality needs of the majority of its users.

What do you think will show up in an SL2, which they would not be able to provide via a firmware upgrade to the SL (I do not think the potential of the SL has been maxed out yet). Will it be a lighter body, different ergonomics, higher MP, a tilt screen, a sensor with better ISO characteristics...? What would make you switch from an SL to an SL2? Alternatively, which new user group would be attracted to the SL2 for the first time, who don't think that the SL covers their needs just yet, what would the camera need to look like (in terms of features)?

If I start answering the question: I do not know what would make me switch, perhaps 36+ MP (and I do not think we will get that)

As the technological advances are all sensor, evf and processor based then all 3 would have to have a significant jump in metrics to make it worthwhile.

The body is actually not that heavy or large (without the lenses) and I think the 'machined from a single block' is here to stay.

Switchable in camera OIS to extend the usability of non SL lenses would be handy ..... as that mitigates some of the need for its alternative ...... better high iso performance ( but both together would be great).

I've not been tempted by the M10 over my existing M240 ...... and I suspect improved performance in the SL would also have to be substantial before I changed.

I don't think the camera needs to change greatly, it just needs a range of compact lenses to appeal to new users. There's a limit to how many people will accept the current, comically oversized, lenses.

More reliable AF in adverse conditions, probably by the addition of phase detection.

Continued advancement in C-AF

Furthermore, whilst Leica might argue contrast detection is more accurate - I feel like they left out phase detection so they could sell the SL2.

sony a5100 got a firmware update that activated on sensor phase detect AF  many months back..so maybe its possible via FW ?

To activate on sensor PDAF via firmware, you have to have on sensor AF points to activate. The Sony sensors have it, SL doesn't.

I agree that a good proportion of potential new users (i.e. particularly those new to Leica) currently probably wait for more native AF lenses to appear. Also because they might want the signature "shot wide open" look they have seen with fast M and R lenses. - Nothing an SL2 can solve

Besides that signature "shot wide open" look, the SL2 should also be able to make coffee, I think. Nothing like a good espresso on the go when one is out shooting wide open.

That is so true

Half the size? You're sure? That would make it smaller than the Fuji X-E2. How about foldable to fit into our back pocket?

...What would make you switch from an SL to an SL2? ...

I can't think of much that would motivate me enough to upgrade my SL body. I'm pretty content with the SL as it is.

Similarly, well, I'd be more motivated to buy lenses if I didn't already have everything I needed in terms of lenses. Once the already announced lenses are out and available, there's not much in the native SL lens line that isn't covered other than ultra tele, macro, and perhaps an extender or two, perhaps a focusing bellows with native mount.

(I don't agree with the 'comically oversized lenses' notion ... the more I work with the 90-280 and 24-90, the less 'oversized' they seem to me. They're not a lot different from the fast SLR zooms I've owned, and the SL is already a smaller body than most of the pro-grade SLR/DSLR bodies of the past 20 years. The SL is more R than M in this respect; if what you want is an M, it's perhaps the wrong camera for you. No one camera can ever be all things to all photographers...)
