Not to rain on anyone’s parade, but I saw a video comparing four 50 mm lenses and the 7 Artisans was by far the worst, especially wide open.  Far too soft and with noticeable colour cast.  At f/5.6 it began to look decent, but then why bother with the f/1.1 bragging rights?  The VM Nokton he showed seemed to be where the value proposition sits if you want quality at a decent price.

I personally find Matt Granger extremely annoying to listen to (am I the only one), but this is nonetheless the video I’m referring to:

Sometimes reviews and fora are like Twitter, baseless opinions all over the place and with the utmost eagerness for negativity. Not directed at Simon but why not stick to really technical, professional views like the one from Erwin Puts for instance.
I will not quote him, it's a small but great review;

http://photo.imx.nl/blog/files/8482d7cd2a98a633910c47415b8d35ff-92.html

Or a review from Thorsten Overgaard, about how he feels about the lens, compares it to a Noctilux and without going into technical stuff gives a nice review and comparison.

http://www.overgaard.dk/7artisans-for-Leica-M-rangefinder-and-Sony-Canon-and-Fujifilm-50mm-f-1-1-Sonnar-review-and-user-report.html

My ten cents?

It's dirt cheap, and really well build for it's price.

I would use it in certain portraits or very dark circumstances, it has a to me a busy looking bokeh which gives it a bit of action in the background (nice with kids), I like the sharp lines in it for instance, and would close it more for a peaceful composition (starting at 1.4)

The whole internet screaming; 'It is soft at 1.1!!!!!' Are clearly not getting the point. Buy the Noctilux and get a life (if you can still afford one ;)

This is hilarious. I love it, my new toy. I have never had anything faster than F2.0 so this is gonna be fun.

Anybody out there still thinking of buying one, or the 28mm from 7Artisans, buy from Hamish Gill from 35MMC. He was gold to do business with. Great communication, great service.

Cheers!

Nice to get some positive feedback on the website - I’m usually getting slated for some very minor technical shortcoming in something I’ve written... ha! ;)

Good to do business with you too :)

Haven't mounted mine (a dull, black one...) on the M8 yet, but it should be pretty good on the cropped sensor. It's the edges and corners that are rather mushy on FF. But it remains a pretty impressive feat at this price point. Ditto for their 35/2. Not equally impressed by what I have seen from the 28/1.4, so that's one I'll pass, despite my lens hoarding disorder.

Well.... Actually... Everybody's always talking about 'brassing' of the black paint versions, I would be curious how a Leica M Pure Brass ®️ would 'brass' after many years of hardcore use. I guess some parts would look polished, while other parts would be darker brass or marked/ scratched. Haven't found one yet online. Must have been produced by Leica at least ones? Marshall's version and a set of 35 models from "the hour glass" all have a clear laquer on them. A shame, because untreated brass only gets nicer used... Sorry oftopic...

Makes me wonder why Leica doesn't offer a clear-coated brass model.
Where the clear-coat wears away what is left is still brass!

I wonder how the gold lens looks on a Titanium plated Leica. The gold doesn't look right on the silver in my opinion.

I understand. That's why you need the diamond soft-release like I ordered. It's an acquired taste.

Hi

I just received my 7 artisans 50mm / 1,1 through Amazon.

On testing I noticed if I set lens detection to "Automatic" on the M 240, Live view only seems to work a few seconds, then the Leica comes up with the message "no lens connected". Live view then is no longer possible neither through the screen nor the EVF. Interestingly enough if I set lens detection to off our choose the lens manually, live view works !

I do believe this is due to the 6bit coding on the lens. On the 7artisans lens It looks much more glossy then the Leica 6bit coding (have two coded summicrons)  and I believe the M240 simply can't read the code and therefore does not recognize a lens. Anybody else having experience with this issue ?

Many thanks for your feedback !

Here om my Leica CL. A lot less hilarious on black. Still over the top. Anybody know if any of the UV/IR cut filters out there will fit with the original metal cap?
