Difference between lens hoods 12504 and 12452

Hello,

I'm considering purchasing one of these lens hoods for my Summicron 35 ASPH.

Finding a good sample of the 12504 seems difficult, but I have found several new 12452 hoods for sale.

The 12452 in pictures looks identical to the 12504 to my eyes, but I'm sure there is a difference between them?

Does anyone know the difference between the 12504 and 12452 hoods?

Can the 12452 unscrewed in two parts as well as the 12504 for the insertion of series 7 filters?

Looks  like it has a screw thread here but i have no experience with it.

Are these the same size/shape as the one that came with the silver 35mm Summicron (and with the M-P (240) Safari)?  I'm assuming so.

I lost mine and can't seem to find the replacement in silver.

And with the M8.2 Safari. It is the same hood apparently but i have no experience with it either sorry.

Otherwise 12585 & 12585H hoods fit well on the 35/2 asph v1. I prefer them to the 12504 personally. YMMV.

There are several true (and false) 12504 hoods for sale on e**y:

http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_pgn=1&isRefine=false&_nkw=leica%2012504

Yes, I've looked at these. All of them looks like they are the exact same model, except this one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/272297054371?ul_noapp=true

That one looks more "authentic". It has the grooves inside the lens hood unlike all the other 3rd party ones. And the brand is "Peipro" which is apparently a brand that makes 3rd party stuff for many brands, and they seem to get good feedback. This one is very expensive for a 3rd party hood however...

Do you have any experience with any of these?

Yeah I know. I actually have a Leitz 12538 hood, which is the same as the 12585/12585H except it's made in plastic. Personally I don't like the plastic, and I think it's too big for the lens. I prefer the size of the 12504.

No sorry the 12504 sits on my 35/1.4 pre-asph and i prefer the regular rectangular plastic hood for the 35/2 asph v1.

I'd only use the 12504 if I needed it to use a filter, like on the 1.4/35 pre aspheric summilux (which I use). Otherwise it provides horrible flare protection and is very expensive. There is a whole series of threads on RFF about how to use something better instead of the 12504. I modified a square hood to fit, it offers some flare protection at least.

But of course that's just my opinion...

As an aside, the 12504 was supplied as standard with the rare L39 version of the 35 Summicron Asph, 11608.  I think the reason is that when that lens is used on an M camera with an M adapter, the way the lens mounts in terms of rotational position means that the standard quadrangular 12526 hood is not 'horizontal', and therefore looks odd.  The same applies, to a lesser degree on screw bodies, I think.

Not really germane to this discussion.......

But I agree with LCT that the 12585 does a better job. And it's cheaper and probably more robust.  So my 12504 stays in the L39 lens box.

Is your 12504 a silver version? Just curious as it is black on this pic somewhat unexpectedly.

No, mine's also black. Here it is mounted on my 11608 lens, which incidentally has a Millich 6-Bit adapter here.  All the pictures I've seen where 11608 lenses are for sale (eg eBay) have shown them with black 12504 hoods.  So, although I don't know if anyone can verify this is how they left Solms, I suspect they were all supplied with black ones.

It's my opinion too. I've owned two 35 Summicron ASPH lenses that came with the fancier round hood and both times I've ended up having to stump up the cash (£100) to buy the standard 12526 plastic hood. The latter is IMO much more effective at keeping flare in check.
