Eric1 Posted May 16, 2017 Share #1 Â Posted May 16, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) I recently purchased a brand new unopened 50 summilux f/1.4 asph lens in silver and when I unpackaged it I noticed a clear liquid on the outside barrel of the lens. I was able to wipe it off but wondered what it was? And whether I should exchange the lens for a different one? Inside the lens it looks fine at the moment and not sure if liquid would have seeped inside. Just wandered if anyone had a similar experience. I want to make sure nothing is wrong with the lens since I spent 4K on it.

Ecar Posted May 16, 2017 Share #2 Â Posted May 16, 2017 Condensation? How did the lens get to you?
mmradman Posted May 16, 2017 Share #3 Â Posted May 16, 2017 Highly unusual, in all my life I never opened a box of any "dry goods" that was anything else but dry. When you say clear liquid I read it liquid was transparent in appearance. We need to understand was it water like or oil like - sticky. Did you wiped it away with a cloth or dared to touch, or lick even, to establish what type of liquid?
Ecar Posted May 16, 2017 Share #4  Posted May 16, 2017 Love the idea of lens licking

Eric1 Posted May 16, 2017 Author Share #6 Â Posted May 16, 2017 I ordered it directly from BH Photo online. It was a clear liquid, not condensation, on the outside. Im guessing it was some kind of Oil because it did not look like water or condensation.
Eric1 Posted May 16, 2017 Author Share #7 Â Posted May 16, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) It was a clear substance and not sticky. It just seemed odd. Kind of pissed because I don't want to worry about something being wrong with the lens.
Eric1 Posted May 16, 2017 Author Share #8 Â Posted May 16, 2017 I would be laughing to if it wasn't my lens I just spent $4,000 on but since it's my lens I am just annoyed.
Ecar Posted May 16, 2017 Share #9 Â Posted May 16, 2017 Jokes aside, if this worries you, which is understandable, you should explain the situation and send it back for a replacement. Peace of mind is priceless.
Jager Posted May 16, 2017 Share #10 Â Posted May 16, 2017 There are lubricants inside Leica lenses and bodies. Â But Leica does not oil the outside! Â Condensation is the only thing that makes any sense. Â I'd just use it. Â Â Congrats on acquiring a great lens. Â Looks especially nice in chrome... stephan54 Posted May 16, 2017 Share #11 Â Posted May 16, 2017 Did not experience liquid, but mine developed a lot of play after a month of use. Had to go to Wetzlar to be taken apart and assembled again.
Eric1 Posted May 17, 2017 Author Share #12 Â Posted May 17, 2017 UPDATE: Emailed Leica and they said the only way a liquid was on the barrel is if it seeped out of the Lens do to high heat. They suggested i exchange it with dealer. So im sending it back for another copy. Better safe than sorry.
earleygallery Posted May 17, 2017 Share #13 Â Posted May 17, 2017 Are you sure you weren't just drooling when you opened it?
Eric1 Posted May 17, 2017 Author Share #14 Â Posted May 17, 2017 Are you sure you weren't just drooling when you opened it? Â Lol, i wish it was my drool. I was very careful to hold it by the cap when I first opened it to inspect it for quality. Something I've never had a problem with other Leica lenses, always perfect. Makes me wonder if dealers know to store merchandise in cool conditions. Lenses apparently don't like heat.
Lord Lucan Posted May 17, 2017 Share #15 Â Posted May 17, 2017 Perhaps they were having cocktail party in packaging department at factory. Liquid must be harmless because you are still here. Enjoy you lens and dont forget to show us what you took with it
