Has anyone tried the 50mm APO on the M-10

Hello Neil,

It might be easier to decide whether to get the 50mm Apo-Summicron or the latest version 50mm Elmar if we knew what it was that you thought you might be photographing. Because in many instances both lenses will photograph more or less the same type of subject in the same manner & you will end up with reasonably similar results.

So, what is it that you think that you might be photographing with 1 of these 2 lenses that you would not be using your other equipment to photograph?

Or what is it, of the other equipment that you have, that you think that you might replace, or complement, with 1 of these lenses on an M10?

Best Regards,

Michael

50 APO is best lens I ever used.  Not counting my 100 APO 2.8

Technique must be flawless to get the most out of it.

Saw a review yesterday compared to .95 Noct.   Center about the same.   Edges worse until well stopped down.

Can`t stand the SL2.  Makes me dizzy.  I will never own one

The apo 50 and M10 are a superb combination. I've been using it as my primary tool since I got a M10. The apo teelyt wth the EVF also is a usable combination, again producing superb results.

Current Leica lenses are noticeably better than those of the early 70s.

I have had the 50 APO for a couple of years, and got an M10 the third week of January. I'm a 50 guy, and I've used the most recent 50 Summilux as well as the (non-APO) Summicron and the Summarit. I haven't tried any of the older 50s. The 50 APO is a magnificent lens and it shines on the M10. It has excellent edge to edge sharpness and doesn't have the field curvature that the Summilux has. The 50 APO is also very neutral, which may be positive or negative depending on what one is looking for. It doesn't have "glow" and its colour signature is very accurate --neither warm nor cool, in my experience. But my favourite aspect of the lens is how smoothly and quickly contrast falls off in the out of focus areas.

I never really clicked with the Summilux. The focusing was not as smooth as I would like. At least with my copy, there was a change in the drag when the floating elements engaged that gave me trouble sometimes with fine focus adjustments.  The Summarit is an under-rated little gem, and the non-APO Summicron is also lovely. When I go through my photos, I can immediately recognize its signature. My two favourite 50s are the Summicrons.

The lens I already have is the LEICA ELMAR-M 50mm f/2.8. I'm a 50mm kind of guy, it's my go to lens for street photography and even landscape ( if I need wider I shoot 3 or 5 frames and stitch). The main reason I got the LEICA ELMAR-M 50mm was because it's sexy, it's a WTF is that you've got on your camera, it's got that WOW factor.......... kind of a bit like me :) :)

Define better.

Modern lenses do have less aberrations, but that does not necessarily mean that they produce better images. For instance the more defined out-of-focus falloff of the newest lenses will produce harsher blur.

I would say that the 50mm Elmer M is fantastic for head shots with its close focusing.......................can you confirm if its okay to colaspe it in the M10??

Not me, I have no M10, but it cannot hit the shutter.

The main problem of collapsible lenses is hitting the side of the camera interior. If the camera mouth of the M10 is similar to previous Ms it should not be a problem but you would need to compare first.

Actually the Elmar-M is a rather unique lens in the Leica lineup. I like it very much as well, for its classic, yet bitingly sharp rendering.

How do I do that mate with only a M6 (the current body for the Elmer) and yet to get M10

I guess I should just take my Elmer with me to Scotland when I pick up the M10 and get the guys there to check it out?

I'm really surprised, since I got my M10 the 50mm Elmar-M has been on the camera most of the time. Great lens. Compact and light. The 2.8 aperture is no issue with the M10 even at night.

Do you find the sweet spot for this lens is about f5,6..........that was what I was using most of the time on the M6?

I love it at most apertures but yes f5.6 & f8 is quite amazing. I do most of my work at these apertures so it's perfect for its size and weight.

I have been collapsing my 50mm Elmar-M on my M10.  I'll put it on the camera extended and only collapse once it's locked in place.  Not had any problems so far.  I have a red scale 50mm Elmar f3.5 but I've not collapsed that as yet!

Okay well thank you for everyone that has taken the time to reply, especially those with feedback on the Elmer M lens as this has probably saved me $6k in buying a 50mm APO..........Plan going forward will be to get the M10 and use my Elmer M as the primary 50mm and maybe (maybe not maybe) I will also use my other M lenses including that monstrosity of a Noctilux 0.95 on the M10 with a +1 Diopter.........pictures to follow

I think Noctiliu+ Elmar-M makes a sensible combination. :)

Thanks Jaapv..........I thought you would like that combo :)
