The sonnar can have very busy / disturbing background though, see image below. Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! That horrible background highlight area is rather more the fault of the person composing the image than the fault of the lens. The c-sonnar is a nice lens for portrait photography when you can utilise it's legendary smooth transition to out of focus. That means you also need to consider the background's highlights, shadows, structure and textures before you compose the image. Simply pointing the camera at something and pressing the shutter without thinking a little about the outcome first doesn't really qualify what is a pointless criticism of the lens. 2

Thoughtful honest feedback 😇 You are right, and ofcourse the image is not worth, however, one needs to try a lens, camera, himself in order to learn. I posted the image as an example. I would like to use the sonnar for other things than portraits as well, so I am learning.

The c-sonnar is a very nice portrait lens, also for still-life photography. I've seen a lot of online hot air surrounding the c-sonnar and I don't understand why those who can't get on with it, don't, unless they aren't the sort of photographers who can use it to it's strengths. The thing about lenses like the c-sonnar and the Voigtlander 50mm Heliar Classic (even more left-field than the c-sonnar) is that with an open mind and a willingness to persevere, they can reward you with very satisfying images.

This is what I like about the m-system. Before Leica, I had a cam and bought the best lens I could afford and having digital cameras those lenses were modern and technically good to very good. With Leica one has so many choices, from technically good to perfect, but also with all kind of “characters” or “rendering”. Fun part is that one really needs to get to know his/her lens in order to see its strengths and weaknesses. Before Leica, having to same focus lengths seemed absurd. Heck, 18 months with a Leica I have already two 35’s and two 50’s. A third of both is not excluded. So much to learn though, but that’s a great thing.
