Ha!  :D  I know I want a 50mm as well, so I'm figuring out how to make this all work with my budget. Have you used and compared a Zeiss Biogon 35/2.0 against the newest Summicron ASPH?

I have had both (currently have the Leica) and on film I preferred the Zeiss images.  They really pop.  That being said i prefer half stops and the Leica size and handling by far.

Interesting. Have you shot both on digital as well? I'll be on an M10 only once mine arrives. I'm still wrestling with the decision between the Zeiss 35/2, the Summicron ASPH, or whether I stretch and get the 35 Summilux for my 35 end of things.

I have both Zeiss 35 & 50 f2, and they make a great combination. But I was used to the size and handling of my 1969 v2 35 Summicron, which I've used since '69. However, my old Summicron lacks a bit wide open on digital. Although the 35 Zeiss images are great, I love smaller lenses, so now I use mainly 35 & 50 f2.5 Summarits, even though I have a number of 1.4 & 2.0 lenses in both f.l.

When I get my M10 I shouldn't need the faster lenses for low light.

I've got a version V summicron that I picked up used for about $1,500. Love it. Pretty much all I use.

I use a version V 50 Summicron on my Monochrom and a 1969 version III 50 Summicron on my M9. I love them both. While I paid more, $1,500 is about right for a clean used version 5 (the latest non-apo 50 Summicron). The older version 3 cron is every bit as good as the v5 but flares when pointed into the sun. A clean used version 3 should run a little less than $1,000. You might find a user copy at $750. I also had a DR (dual range) 50 Summicron which was a wonderful lens but I sold it when I could not use it with the first digital M(8).

You can't go wrong with a Leica wearing a 50 Summicron. But if you are looking for a new lens and want to keep your investment down, go with the 50 Summarit.

Color image is V3 & B&W is V5

Slightly OT but can you get a lens hood for the v5 Summicron? The slide out one I can't get used to.

Try Thorsten Overgaard. He has screw in shades made in the classic clip on style. Not cheap though.

Yeah, I never got the whole 1/3 stop thing. Seems like overkill. Moreover, 1/2 stops on lenses match the 1/2 stops on the camera's shutter speed dial making adjustments easy.

Where's a good non-eBay source for one in excellent condition?

I bought mine at Tamarkin, in Chicago. But I have been buying Leica gear all over the globe. Japan Camera Hunter in Tokyo, Leica Shop in Vienna... for sure the place I like the most is the Leica Shop. They ship wherever you want them to and they've got a lot of gear in all the time.

I started with a Summilux 50 ASPH and a Summicron 50 V5. The Cron is somewhat sharper, but I prefer the Lux' bokeh by far.

How do you guys live without a focus tab on that Cron V5? I also find the focus ring on the Lux MUCH easier to spin. I can't use the Cron's focus ring with only one finger...

I was worried about the lack of the focus tab but it's actually quite easy much easier than I thought actually. Someone showed me how to hold it and have one finger underneath the lens and just sort of fold and unfold your finger and the focus is quite easy. I've considered a lens tab too.

That's exactly what I'm trying. But the focus ring is so stiff, I cannot turn it with my forefinger underneath the lens. I have to use both thumb and forefinger. Did I receive a bad copy?

Unless I have very strong fingers? Have you got a store near you where you could try a different one?

My Cron 50/2 v5 is not terribly stiff but certainly stiffer than the Cron 35/2 ASPH which is by far my easiest focusing Leica M lens. Also the absence of the tab is not helping in this regard.
