Neil and Micky

As far as I can see from examining EXIF data of images posted directly on the forum or linked from an image gallery, there may be one advantage of linking.  This forum has a filesize limit, but linked files that I've examined often exceed forum limits and can therefore be higher resolution.   I've always preferred to  embed on this forum's server, because the image will be visible for years - I assume!   Image libraries - on the other hand - tend  to support subscribing members and those subscriptions and links can be broken.   Of course, images linked to external sites posted on this forum are not visible to viewers who are not logged in. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I hate looking through threads that are populated almost exclusively with grey boxes containing the text: "This image is no longer available" followed by gushing exclamations praising the composition or colors. There are image threads over on RFF that are almost completely gutted of all content because of precisely this issue.

I can see your point, for sure. I've been a forum member of a motorcycle group for over ten years, and still active. Initially I used Photobucket for storing my images, but at times it was unreliable. Since using SmugMug, for many years, a service for which I pay for, it's been totally reliable, and images posted several years ago are still available.

As as long as I don't move my photographs in their folders then nothing changes. I trust the site and the ease of use is fantastic. A big plus is the fact that my photographs are backed up 'elsewhere' other than on my computer or additional external HD in my home!

I'm not really sure about those that aren't logged in being able to see linked photographs or not. Like Rapierwitman, I don't subscribe to receiving notifications when someone replies to a post or thread of mine.

When I eventually fall off my perch I guess the photographs will become unavailable ... but quite selfishly I'm afraid to confess, I'll not really be bothered

Regards Micky

The Q is a wonderful tool when out in challenging light conditions - the exposure is exactly is what you want it to be, and the speed of the autofocus is as close to instant as one could hope from it. Both shots processed via Silver Efex Pro 2, both taken from a weekend blog post which can be found here.
