Come now, you know I love you Jaap. I did smiley and everything. I know that, but it seems you are suffering from Stockholm Syndrome. They should actually rename that Leicaitis.

It is rubbish. Everyone can put video in a small camera except for Leica. Everyone can have usb in their camera except Leica. Even leica puts video in and USB in their dinky and dumpy, hand polished by a virgins nan TL. It's a joke and it's about as funny as prizing your own teeth out with a butter knife (actually you would probably still be good at that but it still wouldn't be funny), or a fart in a lift at best.

If it weren't for the fact these things were in the camera and being relied on by people it wouldn't be an issue. No warning, gone. USB has been there since the M8. All this silly money spent on lenses and bodies and I can't even use the camera in the way I need to now. "Just buy an SL" they say! They will continue pulling these ridiculous stunts so long as people keep throwing their money at them.

The fact remains that the camera does have limited heat management as it is. And they had to fold the motherboard to even be able to squeeze it in.  I don't care about the exact technical reasons, but I am sure they are there.

Anyway, I would have preferred a thicker M240 style camera with improved video. An USB port is not on my personal priority list - never ever used it-  but I don't grudge you yours, unlike some. And yes, my solution was moving to another brand for that part of my photographic use. No big deal; it was a lot cheaper than buying an M10.

You know what, I will even accept that nonsense ;) as truth as it really makes no difference in the end - it's gone and it sucks. As for USB, that isn't heat. But maybe it's some other mystical nonsence that only affects Leica - I hear those solar flares are a killer on USB grip connectors. The connector is still there, covered up under the base plate like an illegitimate child and they're just being silly about it.

Come on Leica, stop being a dick.

Das Wesentliche has nothing to do with heath or USB folks. Just Leica deciding that the M is a legacy camera for ever. Modernity if for the bulky SL. Same bad move as with the R system i'm afraid but i may be wrong.

Tell it like it is brother!!!

But Leica MUST have a boutique in Bangladesh for the whole 5 people in Bangladesh that can afford a Leica.

New TL2 - how much time and money was spent on that while service return times are counted in MONTHS not weeks.

And the world must have a boutique Leica Hotel at Wetzlar Park.

Spend money developing more exotic rubythroated  humming bird feather Special Editions.

But a separate line of M's w/EVF, video and all the other things other camera manufacturers are able to create, including a hinged door to get to battery and sd cards,  seems beyond their reach.

To the Leica Koolaid Brigade I will not be responding to your responses, so save all the hot air.

I think the point that I would raise with both Paul and Jaap is that the TL2 offers another Leica option that provides you with very good quality video and USB. It is not only the SL that provides you with what you want. You can now also choose the TL2 and it looks to provide excellent video. It could be a great companion for an M10 for those who want to shoot video.

This is a good thought. In fact, long time ago I had explored T as a backup to my M240 but decided against it (could not justify the cost, went for cheaper APS-C sony) but with improved TL2, it is again attractive.

A good point too, were it not that I had to make a decision before the TL2 came to the market. Added to which the lenses available for the MFT system in a Panasonic/Leicasonic combination were more suited to my use, and the price difference would have steered me away from the T system.

Yes, that is certainly true in your case as you wanted to shoot wildlife, but if you want to just add video the TL2 is a great solution for M shooters. It has quite nice video capabilities and it easy to use your M lenses and at $2,000 it is the same price as a Panasonic GH5 (which would require new lenses for an M shooter), so for someone just looking to add video who does not have the need to shoot wildlife the TL2 seems like a nifty option that is even price competitive with Panasonic. Not a bad option at all.

The A7II doesn't do 4K, either only the A7s II and A7r II.

A7 didn't and does not shoot 4K. A7r II still has heat issues with 4K if you record internally.

The X1D doesn't have 4K either.

I realise that. My point is all these cameras which are smaller have video that is adequate, some do have 4K from a full frame sensor. The M 240's video was OK, I would be happy with 1080p in the M10.

It should be in the one body - the whole point of the M is the decisive moment and readiness. I don't want a TL or an SL.

The M, M9, M8 all had USB and now it's gone with no warning. That is very bad for those that rely on it who have heavily invested in the system. Like I said, offering a £4.5K SL body is a very poor and expensive solution to problem that didn't exist.

It's like a car manufacturer offering a range of cars - "oh you want windows that open? you need to buy the other model"

Put it all back.

Well, I use the GX8, which is  about half the price of the GH5/TL2, and of the same level.

Boy, a lot of cage rattling going on here,,,,,,,,,,

M10 and video, no thanks.

It's simply not a video capable design. To have that done well, or even usefully, you need 4K, USB3 I/O, preferably 2x HDMI ports, 2x SDHC cards slots to handle the larger 4K files AND a fully orientable screen like Panasonic's GH and the latest GX models, they've done it well. It's not just a heat sink issue. Furthermore shooting video seriously, or even semi-seriously through a rangefinder viewing system is optimistic at best and mostly haphazard in practice. Framing is way more important when shooting video than when shooting stills because it's hard to crop and adjust video in post, certainly so if your output is just 1080.

I tried using the video with the M240 and it was pathetic when you take in consideration what the camera cost and what else more suitable is out there. For some that includes Sony's offerings, for me it's Panasonic's GH series, both truly far more suited to shoot video, extremely well made, thought out plus a hellva lot cheaper.

The SL? No, not for me for quite a few reasons including a number from the list above.

For someone to spend the kind of $$$$'s on an M that would be fully video capable, even it it was technically possible, they should expect the camera to have more than just the ability to shoot 1080 or 4K, it would need to satisfy other ergonomic and video filming adaptive criteria too. Leica seems to have decided, ( rightly in my opinion ), to concentrate on making the M the very best rangefinder stills photographic tool they can at this time and iteration and not compromise that in anyway. So great, that's more than good enough for me.

I have other cameras that can provide much better video function options and at higher performance than anything an M has managed to offer to date, ( including the SL ).

The M's a still camera, accept that, get used to it and use it as such......

No, leave it as it is.

For many of us, 'the whole point of the M' is simplicity and elegance. To me, the M10 is the first desirable digital M. I know a number of photographers who had largely given up on Leica in the digital age who are very pleased to see a camera that recreates the feel of a film M.

No, it really doesn't need "4K, USB3 I/O, preferably 2x HDMI ports, 2x SDHC cards slots to handle the larger 4K files AND a fully orientable screen like Panasonic's GH and the latest GX models".

Not everything needs to have broadcast or Hollywood quality or be some enormous production with a gimbal, external recorder, focus puller etc.

Framing via the screen and live view works fine for me. The M240's video is OK, it has limits and boundaries but it serves a purpose.

Well USB3, yes it does need it, and should have it. No excuse, IMO.

No, just not true, IMO. 1080 is OK, 4K would be a plus, everything else is unnecessary for the kind of camera it is. I'm not talking about transforming it into a serious video camera, but making it a serious camera with video, again.

No, put it back. I also use the M for simplicity and elegance. I just want core requirements in a minimal shell - the M does that. Video and USB is hardly making it inelegant.

You want your digital camera to be like a film camera. I want my digital camera to be like a digital camera.
