Elegant tape solution for covering red dot on silver M

Might be good to actually look at lettering on the back of an M10 before commenting that "you're sure" that's what he meant.

huh??

who cares Jeff...I have the M10, I know what the white lettering says. I simply meant Its the biggest white letters on the M10, therefor if someone was going to go thru all the trouble to hide the white letters this makes more sense....nothing more was implied, nor do I really care.

moving on.

Taping over logos and brand emblem is always an ugly solution to a problem that doesn't exist.

This pretty much sums it all.

I can understand that you might want to put a black logo for pure preference - I did on my M8 and M9. On my M8 because there wasn't a M8P option and in the M9 because, well I bought my M9 on launch date and wasnt to trade in for a M9P purely for design reasons.

Why people tape over logos, I fail to understand. Specially, because I have a funny story about it :

I lived in several countries - Brazil, Spain, France, UK, Switzerland and now Portugal. I travel a LOT. The people who approached me because they seen one of my Leicas, I always had a great conversation. But one episode stays with me : when I lived in Brazil, I had my vacation in Asia and had the opportunity to buy my brand new, spanking Leica M8 in Singapore with a lovely discount. I had film M's, so I had M lenses. I went back to Brazil and I was on a famous plaza, taking pictures with my M8 and 75mm Summilux of street kids that were playing football (soccer for you acros the pond). It was full of tourists. All of a sudden, 10 or 15 kids came out of nowhere and pretty much mugged and stole every single tourist, specially lady earings and cameras. Mine wasn't targeted AT ALL. My wife ( at the time ) necklace was.

The police was taking declarations from everyone an noticed that 3 cameras weren't stolen : two point and shoots and mine. And they said, when talking to a guy who was filling a stolen report for a D1x + 80-200, that the kids target their targets well - only two crappy point and shoots cameras werent targeted and the guy with the granny camera. That was me. I had most likely the most valuable camera in that plaza - by far - and wasn't touched.

GP

ps : yes, it had the red dot at the time.

pss : thieves and alike do not know what Leica is. NO idea. WHATSOEVER. They can recognize a big camera and a big lens, because they think it would look more professional and thus, fetch more money. I bet anyday, that you leave a M10 with red logo and a Nikon D100 ( yes, the 15 year old crap ) and 99% to 100% of the thieves would go for the 50 usd Nikon ( what is worth these days )

BTW - cookedart, I like the little stick-on transparent nubby on your front control button.

Those self-sticking transparent nubs are available at Ace Hardware. A whole card of them costs a couple bucks. I put them on the door lock/unlock buttons on my Toyota because I have neural damage of the hands. They have been on for five years. Good stuff!

Some people don't like strutting their stuff, others do, c'est la vie ;)

I don't think it's about strutting your stuff or not, the camera is very low key as is. Anyone who asks thinks I'm using an old film camera and are surprised when they see the screen.

A Canon DSLR with 70-200 zoom draws far more attention than any Leica badged or not

I've researched and can't find an elegant tape solution for covering the red dot on a silver M.

Anyone know of any pics out there of silver tape such as duct tape?

I find the retouched dots all try too hard so I don't want to see any acid miracles but rather simply a piece of gaffers tape or equivalent like black cameras.

Sad

I agree.  Not only that.  If I pay that much for a camera, I WANT the world to know it is the best.  You wouldn't peel the prancing stallion off of a Ferrari.

Yesss, 100% d'accord!

A Leica M is unsuspicious enough, even with the Leica logo.

People will mostly ask you if you really can take photos with this stuff nowadays ...

And the others, looking for a Leica, will steal them even with a taped Logo!

I used to think along these lines, too ... until I eventually taped the red dot over on my black-paint M9. Since then, I get approached and asked about my Leica significantly less often than before. So now I got all my red Leica logos taped over. It does make a difference.

Black logos (from DAG) are better looking than red ones IMO.... and certainly cleaner looking than tape, without residue...and still inexpensive. I think discretion has a lot more to do with the photographer, but the black dots are less noticeable too, on black or silver bodies.

The blank dot replacements from mgr in Hong Kong are probably the most discrete.

Not sure I'd bother though

Discreet, perhaps, but looks like it's covering a hole (which it is) .....like the markings on a car dashboard where the optional radio is supposed to go.

DAG's logos are finished and fit perfectly like the official ones, only painted black with silver Leica script, much like the one that appeared on the black M8.2 (never to be done again, as I think Leica Microsystems owns the official red logo and they weren't pleased).

Do you object to people talking to you about your Leica? I quite enjoy talking to people interested enough to ask me about photography and/or my camera.
