phong Posted February 4, 2017 Share #1 Posted February 4, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) After 2 years of using the Typ 240, my number one wish is that the viewfinder shows just the frame line of the focal length in use, ideally as a continuous rectangle, when using coded lenses. Especially when switching to a 50mm, it always takes my mind a while to stop seeing the 75mm frame line cluttering the viewfinder. Interestingly enough, that didn't use to bother me as much in 20 years of using the M6, though at one point I did think about having the 75mm frame line masked away. Maybe that's because 50mm was my preferred focal length during that time, so my mind was quick to adjust to it. Anyway, The 50/75 frame line cluttering was why I never wanted a 75mm lens. All in all, really a fantastic camera, now apparently bettered by the M10.

jaapv Posted February 5, 2017 Share #2 Posted February 5, 2017 Technically impossible, I fear. Unless you modify the slides to remove framelines permanently
david strachan Posted February 5, 2017 Share #3 Posted February 5, 2017 I hear what Jaap says. But like phong I find the brightly lit frame-lines too cluttering and distracting. Much finer illuminated lines would be better. And/or control amount of illumination. all best..
Exodies Posted February 5, 2017 Share #4 Posted February 5, 2017 Technically impossible, I fear. Unless you modify the slides to remove framelines permanently What laws of physics would it break?
Jeff S Posted February 5, 2017 Share #5 Posted February 5, 2017 http://www.l-camera-forum.com/topic/66999-anatomy-of-the-leica-m8-framelines/ Same basic concept with all Ms. Coded lenses have nothing to do with it....it's the current mechanical design. New digital Ms have frame lines illuminated by LEDs instead of by a window....but the mechanics didn't change. Jeff
Exodies Posted February 5, 2017 Share #6 Posted February 5, 2017 Would anyone suggest that to go from two pairs of frame lines to three pairs would be impossible? Surely not; but it seems accepted that to go further is.
mmradman Posted February 5, 2017 Share #7 Posted February 5, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) We concentrate on mask selection inside the viewfinder but let's not forget there is link (no pun) to lens mounted onto the camera In addition to frame line mask 3-pair limitation all lenses are designed and have bayonet machined to engage frame line selector in one of the three positions only, so to have single frame selection all lens mounts would have to be modified for six frame selection. Alternative to mechanical frame selection would be to rely, from today's perspective, on 6-bit coding only but that would be some future Leica M as all current M models including latest M10 have 3 way frame selection. Exodies Posted February 5, 2017 Share #8 Posted February 5, 2017 I don't think anyone expects to use the current hardware to achieve precise frame selection. It should have been in the M10. It needs no change to the lenses.
lct Posted February 5, 2017 Share #9 Posted February 5, 2017 Removing the 75mm mask is a no brainer. My M6J did it 20+ years ago. Pity to be unable to use 75mm lenses in RF mode though. Electronic frame lines should fix the issue i guess but i have no idea how it may work with an optical viewfinder
UliWer Posted February 5, 2017 Share #10 Posted February 5, 2017 For the film MP Leica offers several frameline combinations á-la-carte: the traditional 35-50-90 or a five frame version leaving out 75mm. This is not officially offered for the M (type 240), though I think CC would do it, if one paid for it.
Keek Posted February 5, 2017 Share #11 Posted February 5, 2017 I think it is possible to make for good mechanic with black marker or tape, but you lose guarantee.
