Diopter?

An eye surgeon friend of mine emailed each other back and forth a dozen times trying to sort out which diopter for me to buy, with no clear conclusion other than to go to a Leica store and try each one until I hit the correct one. Another option would be to buy 3 or 4 and return the ones that don't work. I have not done it yet.

Don't buy anything. Instead, You, together with your camera should attend your optician and he will put his diopter lenses in front of your eyepiece to determine which is appropriate for your eyesight. Simply making a theoretical decision based on an ophthalmic prescription but without the camera is not the best way to go. You need to be aware that the leica camera already contains a small adjustment lens. I think it is 0.5 but not sure if it is a plus or minus.

Then buy the diopter value that actuall works with you and the camera combined.

The Leica corrective eyepieces correct for near/farsightedness.  If you suffer from astigmatism you will likely need a third party eyepiece if you wish to shoot without glasses.  I have 20/20 (uncorrected) vision at distance, but a +2.5 correction is needed for reading.  On my Leica a +1 eyepiece is perfect.
