SD Card compatibility issue?

Your reply is confusing.

My assumption was that using an SD card in another device is fine, assuming you do a full format to the card before using it in another device.

If this were anybody but Leica I would agree.

Plus you are not taking the full process. Once you insert a card the camera writes to that card. It appears that some of what is written is not in the area that's formatted. Figuring your doing a standard full format.

A full format = plugging the SD into my PC and doing a full format with your favorite tool, not an in-camera format. Takes several minutes per card.

All of the cards that didn't work in the M10 (3 of them) all work in other my cameras after a full format.

And do they work in the M10 after a full format?

Panasonic Gold might be a good choice. These cards include an automatic write/read check, they were the best choice on the M9 as well.

Can we still buy Panasonic Gold cards?

True, and there is no way to see that info. It's not even a .hidden file.

SD cards have a protected area that is not touched by a full format of any kind, whether a secure format or not. That protected area is used by the host controller (on card) to allocate blocks and manage balance (wear leveling) writing.

If you want to see the hidden files in Finder, you need to run this text in Terminal:

defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles YES

killall Finder

You will probably want to reverse this afterwards in which case this is the text for Terminal:

defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles NO

killall Finder

am curious,.if you format one of the cards in your M10, and then check it on a mac with disk utility..what fileformat does it show ? and any partitions? hidden files ? unaccounted space ?

It goes beyond that. The formatted file system is all that gets reformatted. There are boot sectors that may or may not get rewritten. Even if they are rewritten when you insert the card all of that is modified by Leica's own code. That's one of the reasons for the recommendation not to use cards in different bodies. Because what looks good to one camera may not work in another. Often cameras will simply ignore non standard data so the cards work. It's kind of a mess.

No, there are sector readers that will read everything from sector 0 to the final sector on the physical card. Including the reserved areas for the controller. The vendor uses such tools to diagnose card issues. However the dumps are usually in hex and you need special knowledge.

Or you can select show hidden files in the finders options menu.

I am wondering: does SDFormatter go beyond a reformat of the file system?

I'm not sure that it exactly right. Leica doesn't write anything directly to the card. The SD controller does. Generally, the only time a camera can ruin a card is when a write is prematurely interrupted.
