Nico: I see you are using both the Zeiss 1.4 and 2.8 35mm ZM lenses. I am thinking of buying (not for the first time!) one or the other and trying to balance weight vs image quality. Would you say that after f2 they are indistinguishable, as suggested in another Leica forum thread? Pics with the 1.4 Distagon look better than anything else in my LR catalogue but I did find it so heavy…...

I am in Greece at the moment for a short holiday with the Leica M10. A lot more images to follow when I am back and have access to my workstation again - a couple of images taken and processed very quickly on a Mac Book -whilst I am away - I hope that the colour is OK as the screen is not calibrated. First images - Zeiss ZM 35/1.4 second Zeiss ZM 25/2.8

Elan, what are your thoughts on the 28mm Summaron? I didn't think that it would be of any interest to me but I must admit, I am tempted.

I also didn't think much of the new 28 Summaron when I decided to buy it.  I just wanted a tiny 28 lens for walking around instead of my bulky 28 Summilux (which I love, except for its size/weight).  When I bought the M10 a 28 Summaron was available so I got it but didn't mount it for two weeks (I wanted to first test the M10 with the Summilux lenses I know).  Then one day I mounted it for the first time and... it has hardly come off my M10 since.

I like the 28 Summaron a lot, in full sunshine.  It's quite sharp and I like the rendering and the strong vignetting at f/5.6.  And of course the tiny size is wonderful and the brass/chrome finish is a delight.

Out of the sun the results are ok, but nothing spectacular.

p.s. I also think it looks great on the M10 :)

The Elmarit 28 is a perfect lens, very small and of highest IQ.

So why buy the Summaron ? And then fight with the strong vignetting and the missing sharpness. (And gifted with a very ugly lens hood - that most try to avoid using.)

How many grams of weight did you save ?        :D  B)

I actually like the strong vignetting...  I think the lens is quite sharp... the rendering is unlike any of my faster lenses and to my liking... and most importantly, I am having a lot of fun with the little 28 Summaron.

I did consider the Elmarit 28 and the Summicron 28, there is a thread discussing it in the lens forum.  Had I bought either of those, it would have been the cron.

Thanks.  The Summaron 28/5.6 has such strong vignetting that at f/5.6 anything outside the center appears slightly underexposed.

Hmmmmm, really?  These are shots that I got from my 28mm summaron (which is the original version) and M9 (which I no longer have) in St Maarten and they are reasonably clear throughout the entire image. I have also used the summaron with my MM (which I no longer own) and film Ms and unless I am shooting wide open (which on the beach shouldn't be the case) I don't get significant vignetting.   Perhaps then it is the M10???  Or, perhaps it is the new version???

Your old 28 Summaron shows much less vignetting than my new one does.  Here are a couple more wide open images, pretty much out of the camera.  You do notice the vignetting on mine :)

Elan - Did you say your shots are at f5.6?  If so, than that explains it.  The vignetting is indeed quite heavy wide open at 5.6.  My shots above were all at f11 and f16, where the vignetting is much more managed and can be easily eliminated in PP.  The lens is quite contrasty, which, IMHO doesn't lend itself to shooting wide open is bright sunlight on a digital sensor as the highlights get blown too easily.  :(

Btw, even with all this discussion, I still think your images are underexposed and would look better if you brightened them up in your editing software.
