And if he didn't take it, there's no indication if the retailer wouldn't have sold it to some guy who walked in off the street.

As I've said before, develop a relationship with your dealer. But only from him. Not any and every online peddler. Guaranteed every store has 2 lists. The list of unknowns who stay somewhere in line, and the loyal customer list who gets first call regardless.

Loyalty works 2 ways. Put your name on 20 lists, you're just a number and will have to wait until loyal customers get treated the way they should.

This is correct.   It is also the only way to help preserve the smaller dealers.

I guess this is what is happening to me. Loyalty/Royalty sucks..

Now i get the reason why experienced Leica users keep saying get to know a dealer well.

How is this any different from, say, paying $200 to the guy standing at the counter to set you up with one?

While that is undoubtedly true, the reward for loyalty should be great service as opposed to preferential treatment. If a dealer prioritises old customers over new ones his business will gradually die with his customer base.

I am totally a new customer for Leica, as this is my very first Leica product. So now, is it understandable why a dealer prefers me, who is a new customer rather than old customer?

not even in the same realm.

First off, this has nothing to do with Leica...its a life lesson. Get to know your dealers. Its all about relationships not payoffs.

You get to know your dealer and develop a friendship. The dealer knows he can trust you and your word is good. If you place a pre-order, he knows you are serious and don't have other orders with 6 other dealers....in return, he works harder for you and keeps you in the know. He looks out for you and supports you every way he can. He gives you a heads up when new products are coming, or inventory is changing.

If you are in business, any business Its no different...you develop relationships and friendships with your clients and you take care of them in much the same way. It may not be a camera pre-order, but its no different.

There is  but one interpretation. You let your greed overpower your will to do the right thing and let the salesperson call the next person on the list. The price of all things sold in a market is based upon many factors, one of which being how much overhead a retailer has in moving each unit to the customer base. Each person who takes more time of a salesperson with weekly pestering not only raises the overhead involved in peddling said unit, but also annoys the merchants and causes them to want to be rid of you. They may be nice and shoot the sh*t with you but they aren't your friends and they do not want you to call. Attitudes like yours are the kind that work to ensure you get your item as quickly as possible.. but in the long run can cause uneasiness that muddies the supply line and drives up the cost of service.

Jesus, it's just a damn camera. So what if the guy gets it sooner because he pestered a retailer? Big deal. It's not like he pushed someone aside who was waiting for a kidney transplant. And no, it will not drive up the cost of service. Not even if a thousand people do it. Lighten up already.

At some point the camera store owners say geez these customers are being more picky and less patient and taking up more and more of my salespeople's time.. gotta raise the markup on accessories to cover costs. You could argue that this takes years and is still minimal. But when the alternative is to simply conduct oneself with social order in mind, well it's just such a simple and right alternative that it seems silly to just say oh to heck with what's right.

LOL It's supply and demand that determine price, not whether someone pressured some hapless salesperson into bumping them to the head of the waiting list. Leica will set the price based on overall demand of their product and they don't give a damn whether some retailer is giving some customers preferential treatment.

Lucky you!

I contacted the Sydney (Australia) store via email today.

Here is their reply:

"M10 cameras are currently being allocated on an order basis.

We do however have an M10 camera to try out in-store.

As these are hand assembled in Germany - we make far fewer units than other manufacturers.

We are currently expecting a three month lead time on orders in both colours."

If you see the other side of the coin - no one wants a camera that is manufactured in a rush by unskilled workers which -of course- does not satisfy those who ordered long time ago and it also doesn't explain the "weird" way of distribution. Another reason could very well be the shortage of batteries. I don't know what the problem is or what causes the shortage but no one wants an exploding battery - so I think Leica itself also has to wait to get batteries to deliver a full set.

The shortage of batteries is completely unrelated to Leica delivering cameras.

The shortage seems to be mostly in the US, where they are simply nonexistent...I assume this is due to battery import restrictions in the US and the way they have to be shipped (via cargo ship). Batteries seem to be delivering in the rest of the world and especially in Germany.

I happened to be in Germany a couple of weeks ago.  My first stop was to a camera store in Cologne, where I found 2 for sale.  As I am in and out of live view frequently, I bought both.  Out of curiosity, I also checked the Leica Boutique in the Frankfurt airport.  They had received 10 batteries and sold out almost immediately.  At the time I asked, they had received none since.
