M9.5

Given the logical increment from M9 to M10, what was M Typ240 all about. Was it an experiment or something.

M240 was (and remains) the technically advanced M-line. The M-system may follow two paths in the future: The simplistic (essential) line - presently represented by M10 - and the more technically advanced line - presently represented by M240.

There are some loose claims (or wishes or ideas) that the Mxxx-line may become a mini-SL or a QL in the future. Time will tell...

That would make sense.

With the release of the M10 today I have decided to think of my M240 as my M9.5.

Pete.

Well you could start with the M3 - being the M1 and the first MP the M1.1.

Then the M2 was the M2 and the M4 the M2.1. The M1 would be the M0 and the MD the non-M.

The M5 was the M3 und the M4-2 was the M2.2, the M6 the M4, the M6 TTL the M4.2, the MP the M4.1, the M7 the M4.2.2 and the  M-A the M2.2.1

The M8 was the M5 and the M9 the M6. The Monochrome the M6-M and the M-E the M6.0

The M240 was the M7 with many .-variations

We now have reached the M8.

I think if they're going to do that they probably should let someone know. ATM a few folk on the forum are not super happy with the feature removal of the M10...

Their marketing team seem incapable of handling any kind of roadmap but there was a posting in this forum about another announcement in spring. Like the M10 leaks it is impossible to know whether it's a strategy or loose tongues or bullshit.

The dissenting voices on the forum were shouted down at the time when it came to the M240's name, 'of course we all understand the new naming policy, you are an idiot to question Leica' they said. But the public didn't understand. As far as enthusiasts are concerned any name is good enough for the new toy, the Leica Mist would be lapped up, but the public know better.

Where does that leave the M262? In retrospective it feels a bit mean of Leica to push out the M262 to customers when they hade the M10 in the pipeline in such a short distance.

Yes, I can see that M262 users might be somewhat disappointed and/or surprised by the M10. Perhaps M262 is more of a niche camera, and in that respect in the category of the MM and M246 monochromes?

I am neither disappointed nor surprised.   As I noted in another thread were I looking to buy a camera today I'm not sure I'd buy the M10.

Pete.

The other day I was thinking that when I use my 0.95 Noctilux on my M9 it's an M9.95 :)

I got my 262 in September and I am not at all disappointed. The first Leica in my famIly was bought by my grandfather in 1937. I'm still using it. What I wanted in the next Leica to add to the family collection was something similar to the IIIc and was delighted that at just the moment I was ready out came the 262. I set the aperture, the speed, focus and take the picture. That's all I want. Hoping it will last 80 years and then my grandkids can buy the next Leica for the family. Let's get some 262 solidarity going here. I don't feel like the poor relation in the M family !!
