Hi, Jean-Marc,

I've never come across this lens before so do you know what its original purpose was?  Since you're using this on your M9-P I assume it must be rangefinder-coupled, so was this already part of the lens or did the rangefinder-coupling need to be added afterwards?  Did you estimate what would be in the frame or use an external viewfinder?  (My apologies for the volley of questions and I'd be grateful if you could very kindly post some pictures of the lens please?)

Pete.

Hello Pete,

happy to answer your questions !

There is hardly any info about this lens online and  Jeffo has the second prototype: https://www.flickr.com/photos/44264/albums/72157688410108461

I like this focal length a lot and this lens  came my way as my low "bid offer" was accepted by the seller 🙂

Now I estimate the frame as it fits half way inbetween the 50mm and 75mm frames on most Leica M bodies. I use the 75mm asph lens code on the M9-P.

Some shots taken with the M10M (which I owned briefly):

It is a fine lens but requires a good lens shade as it does flare :

Best, Jean-Marc.

Thanks, Jean-Marc, that's quite some find!  It produces wonderful pictures and I note that it has 13 blades that produce attractive out of focus areas (to my eye) and that it has a 39-mm filter thread as well.  It makes me wonder why it didn't made it past the prototype stage.  Congratulations and I hope you will enjoy using it.  Thank you for posting about this rare and excellent lens.

Peter,

the original front lens filter thread of the 62mm f2.4 Elcan is 36mm .  It does not show any vignetting on the M9-P with a step up ring , a e39 UV filter and hood fitted.

It is a very light compact lens btw !

Best, JM.

Oh I see, I was fooled by the hood.  Thanks for clearing that up, JM.

I've just received the 17-blade 1951 Carl Zeiss Jena 5.8cm f/2 Biotar in M42 mount that I thought had been lost in the post so I hope to be able to get out and shoot that soon.

Pete.
