Thanks folks: I took this shot this morning with a friend who is an artist- the owl has been in training for a week to get used to eating near the skull... I played around with the image in LR to give it more contrast - brightening the highlights and light areas- and to blacken out the background- but nothing radical- and no changes to the colour out of camera on Auto.

here is another before dinner:

Does an Elmarit-M 90mm f2.8 (11807) manufactured in 2000 count as 'older glass'? Well, one arrived this morning, (looking as though it has never been fitted to a camera), the sun was shining this afternoon, so time to put it to test on my M9. As can be seen, the cropped images are from quite small areas in central positions. Are the results typical of what this lens on an M9 should produce?...

Keith, this question has passed without comment, possibly because it would have been better posed in another thread. My answer is that your results are not typical of what I would expect from this fine lens.

I wonder if your copy has been 6-bit coded? I ask because in my experience lenses manufactured before their use on M8 or M9 cameras often display focusing aberrations. While coding is not essential for a 90mm lens, apart from ease of identification in the EXIF, I believe Leica did ensure that the focusing accuracy was brought up to digital standards when coding was applied retrospectively. I suggest you consider asking the vendor to consider bearing or sharing the cost of recalibration so that the lens performs correctly.

Its a now obsolete 1990 Mandler design so I reckon it does! Not bad at its closest focus - full frame on M9 + a 100% crop.

Ah, my new favourite lens :) Full-size and 100% pixel crop from my second outing with it on my M9. Quite pleased.
