I like the Skin Color from that combo and als find the images sharp but at the same time smooth (I know that doesnt sound logic)

I think your images look much like portrait shots coming from the 24-90. (Perhaps, no surprise there?)

This one: 77mm f/3.8

The compression here absolutely murders the images. It does so for yours and Tom's. I can't tell much of a difference but Tom's look slightly better IMO, maybe because they are more crisp to begin with.

With compression do you mean framing too tight or DOF too shallow (or both) or something else?

They were not meant as great examples for portraits but just some snaps to check out the lens.

Resale on SL lenses is, at best, speculative.

As an N=1: I bought my SL 24-90 used (6 months old) at -30% in excellent condition; which is a similar discount (-20-30%) one can achieve with purchasing used M lenses out of current production

There are some discussions abut the speed of AF with this lens. So I place my question here, no better place currently.

In the AF settings it is possible to specify the number of AF steps   (1, 5, 37, 49 etc.) are possible.

Has somebody already played around with these values ? What is their influence on the AF results/precision and on the AF speed ?  Would they for example (positively) influence the AF speed of the SL 50 lens ?

I do not really understand what these values are meant for - can anybody give an explanation ?

Thanks.

And another item not really clear: Since firmware 2.0 the number of single-point AF points has been increased to 529 AF-points  (only in single-point AF mode)

How can I make use of this ? Is the manual selection now somehow "finer" ? Or is this a feature just used by the automatic AF function (like tracking AF, or face detect AF, but this is probably not single-point but multi-point) ?

Sorry, in case this has been answered before.  :)

There seems to be more confusion about this. Even in the DPR SL test they specified 49 AF-points instead of the 529.

Can I ask another question... is af speed a function of aperture ie does the camera have hunt longer or more precisely for the correct focus point when the depth of field is very narrow? Or is af spend independent of the selected aperture ?

Thanks

AF speed is going to be dependent on the ability for the camera to detect contrast. Lighting, DOF, subject matter all make a difference. You'll likely notice errors much more easily at large aperture since the camera has less room for error.
