As many of you maybe discovered the summicron 40/2 is amazingly good for that price, hardly no flare. And makes a wonderful compact kit.

But my lenshade is starting to die. So my questions is:

* Is there a good way to make old dry rubber wet andd shiny again.

* Are there any metal replacement on the market.

My one was not seriously damaged (i.e., broken), but simply old, a little dry, with gray areas... last year I treated it with a product (do not remember the name) I had at home to treat rubber devices for gardening (I also do not remember where had been bought... I suppose from my wife in some do-it-yourself shop): was a sort of dense oil to apply with a small brush... the result is no bad: I have the impression that elasticity has became better, all the hood has became darker, even if the former gray areas are still well distinguible. I do not think you can find a metal cap; now, a question for you: from your thread, I suppose you use it on M8: do you know if is possible to find a IR/UV filter that fits into Summicron 40 + hood as did the original filters (kept in position by the hood itself) ?

Thanks in advance.

Regarding my question of IR/UV filter on the Cron 40+Hood... this forum is great ! I quickly found a post with a do-it-yourself solution that seems not too difficult, see :

I have a 39 IR/UV filter, do not like so much to destroy it, so if an apt solution can be found somewhere, could be good, otherwise I'll take antoher 39 filter and follw the well depicted instruction of the above quoted link

My tip does not destroy the filter, Luigi.

You just have to remove the blocking ring from the filter.

Can be re-used without any problem afterwards and your filter will look again as new.

Sorry, I used the term "destroyed" in a wrong way: my problem is that I use my 39 filter almost fixed on the Tele Elmarit 90 : 40+90 is a fine and compact combo, so I definitely need another 39: Your pictures are very clear and useful for my goal

Depends how often you intend to use IR-cut filters of course.

I very seldom need them personally so i use the same hood/filter combo with the 'cron 40, an Elmar 50 (pic 1) and a 'cron 50.

Can fit on the Tele-Elmarit as well but a thinner rubber ring than mine is mandatory otherwise it will block the lens as you can view it on pic 2 below.

For those interested, just beware not to screw the hood too tightly on M lenses as the pitch of their filter thread is not the same as that of C lenses as you know.

Also the 'thin' Tele-Elmarit being prone to flare, a larger hood than this would be preferible certainly.
