Can we have a new M with a proper diopter, please?

Let's face it, many of us are OLD. Our eyes are failing us. I gave up the M a couple of years ago because of astigmatism.

I am happy with the S and the SL because they have proper diopters. Sometimes I use them with glasses, sometimes without - they are easily adjustable.

The small, screw-in diopters for the M are too unflexible. If I could get a S/SL type of diopter on the M, I might come back. I am OK with an add-on, but the current diopters are not good enogh.

There are rumors of a new M. A proper diopter would extend the user base, me thinks.

(Moderators, this should have been in the M240 section, not Monochrome, sorry)

The same here.

However it appears to be very difficult, if not impossible to do so.

Leica has proven that they see the need by their other models. Yet, despite their uncontested optical expertise and willingness to listen to their customers they have never done so. To me that suggests design difficulties.

So magnifiers with their own diopter correction?

On digital viewfinders

(little TV screens, you know! I hate them so much, that I refuse to memorize their proper name)

you don't need a magnifier. You can press a button for cropping and unless you have a M240, you can move the enlarged field around.

Nevermind: film is film is film!

The Barnacks had a focus lever.  Would bring the subject into focus...or am I up the wrong tree?

all best...

Not quite, that lever was intended to focus the RF system to infinity. That it worked as a half-way dioptre correction was a side-effect.

Would you then need another diopter corrector to go on top of a magnifier? Could a magnifier work at all with randomly focused source?

Probably. In practice the diopter correction of the magnifier is often different from the one needed for the bare viewfinder.

How do you say it is it is impossible ?  Just because Leica don't do it and don't bother to do it means  that  can be done  but it is ignored  . They don't have any concern  .

One of the issues for me would be the protrusion that would be involved.  I use a +3.5 diopter on the M and manage fine (I need reading glasses and glasses for driving or theatre, but the rest of the time I'd rather manage as I am.  I quite like bringing the world back into sharp focus when I put a camera to my eye :).  If you put on an adjustable diopter on the M it would inevitably stick out.  No longer could you slip the camera + lens into a slim pocket in Domke satchel because it would catch.  This is one of my biggest gripes with the SL - a lot of the handling bulk derives from the enormous projecting EVF+diopter.

For the moment, I'll sacrifice some flexibility in return for the benefits of the slim screw in diopter.  I hope they don't change this.  OF COURSE - if it could be achieved without changing the camera body's form, I'd be in.  If it meant bulking up the M, then I'd argue against.

If that were the case, none of their other models would have a diopter correction. As it is, all of them have.

Back in the days of the film M's the story was they couldn't fit an adjustable diopter without increasing the depth of the top plate.  I was hoping when the digital M's came along and Leica had to deepen the top plate for other reasons, they would be able to fit an adjustable diopter.  Apparently not.  I prefer to not take off my glasses (very nearsighted) but with age I need a +1 on the Leica because the rangefinder and display are set at 1.5 or 2m (I forget now which).  As my eyes change, I end up going to a +0.5 and then nothing, then get new glasses and go back to the +1.  An adjustable one would be a treat.

I a little confused ...Your using a +3.5 diopter, that fits your M?

I'm using a +4, a form member was kind enough to sell me. As I understand it diopters are only available up to +3 and the +4 has been discontinued.

Other that Walther for a custom made dioptor is there an outlet for  a +3.5 or a +4?

Using the correct correction lens has made all the difference in the world and focusing is now a breeze.

I'm always concerned after a long day of hiking I'll lose my irreplaceable +4.
