The video or accompanying text is hardly a "review". A waste of time if you want to learn anything insightful about the lens. I recommend anyone interested in this lens should try it out in person because IMO it is not one to buy unseen.

Yes, the video was utterly cringeworthy and a masterful exercise in shoehorning in as many clichés of this genre as possible. Youngish bloke wandering around touristy area pretending to be part of the scene (I'm surprised he didn't high five a few of the old blokes playing dominos), coffee and/or drink prepared for the video (and still photos of said drink taken), lingering sequences showing camera on a table or bar top just before said bloke picks it up in a contrived and unnatural manner.... What it wasn't in any shape or form was a review.

All true, but, who needs review Erwin Puts style, I think video targets typical purchaser of an overpriced retro lens who buys it for above all Leica mystique (wrong reasons) - in short, glossy advertising.

Hey, the guy made an effort, and after all, it was free.

It seemed more like a holiday / lifestyle promotion rather than lens review.

The exact opposite to Erwin's comments.

Where was it taken? He had a really strong accent, I presumed he was American?

It said Cuba, I believe.

A correction to the below previous post:

I took my old F:5.6 Summaron (previously cla'd by the fabulous S. Krauter) and did some comparison shooting with it and an Elmarit M ASPH; both were with an M9. All shots were under virtual identical conditions on a dull (lighting wise) day; and were shot were from a tripod.  I shot the F:5.6 Summaron as a 21mm 11134 and the Elmarit as itself; probably not the best set-up for the Summaron.  Considering its age, the old 5.6 Summaron did quite well but was no match for the Elmarit by any reasonable criteria.  Even in the central area fine detail was lacking at all magnifications; on the edges detail was grossly inferior and the the corners were predictably weaker.  One area where the tiny Summaron really shined was on focusing while on the tripod; the infinity lock knob was useful and the stupid focusing collar on the Summaron  Elmarit remains  a complete pain.  The first photo is the old lens, the second the Elmarit; the focusing distance was about five feet. If you wish high resolution examples, send me a personal. Regards, R

Do you mean the focus tab of the Elmarit 28/2.8 asph? It is similar as other modern Leica focus tabs IINW. Why do you criticize it if i may ask? Just curious.

We just published a video review of the 28mm Summaron with a little companion article to go along with it. Check it out.

Shooting the “New” Leica 28mm Summaron-M in Little Havana

Looks like a review about a bragging photographer and not about the lens, which seems to be nothing but a mere accessory.

I expected better photography and much less look-at-me-I'm-holding-a-Leica scenes.

When I use a tripod I usually use one with a flat mounting surface several inches square; the two tips on the focusing tab extend below the M9 baseplate restricting their movement on such a mount. Of course the remedy is to use a ball head, but I seldom remember to do so and am inclined to favor the larger mounting surface.   Yes, all the lenses with that "tab" are similar when mounted on a flat surface, it is not a problem unique to the Elmarit.  Perhaps it is ignorance, but I can think of no good reason to extend the tab tips below the base of the camera; it seems to be a human engineering failure. In any event, I find it an impediment not an aid to photography. Regards, Ron

Never happened to me so far but thanks for sharing. Question is would a smaller focus tab remain as handy as current ones but i have no idea about that.

Now you have my curiosity aroused: my 28mm Elmarit and 35mm Cron both have focusing tab tips that extend below an M9 or M8 baseplate. Do the tips of the focusing tab extent that much on your lenses? Regards, Ron

I have not my M8.2 here but neither 35/2 asph nor 28/2.8 asph have focus tabs extending below the M240 baseplate actually.

Interesting. The human engineering problem (as I see the situation) would have occurred some time ago, notably before the M240 - thanks, Ron

Many of my M lenses, including above extend slightly below; however, since I use RRS plates, I never have any issue.

yep, I gave up after 4 mins...

Me too, and I wanted to like it.

I should clarify that my resposne was to Wattsy's advice regarding trying the lens before buying.  It was the lens I really wanted to like but still gave up after 4 minutes. I didn't think the results justified it's purchase in addition to my 28 Summicron and Elmarit.

I didn't last as long with the ad which was awful.  However I suspect that David Farkas knows his target audience over there far better than we do.

Of course, I understand it is just a piece of nauseating lifestyle type marketing puff but it is nonetheless an irritating waste of time having been posted here as a video review. I'm not sure the alternative is "Erwin Puts style" either – it doesn't have to be a binary choice and there is presumably an informative and engaging middle way?
