Agree - although I must admit I bought mine when they first came out somewhat blind  to its qualities.

It's interesting how so many people seemed to (profoundly) dislike this lens when it was introduced. Maybe they just failed to see or understand its potential. Mine as been attached to my M9 or MP on a permanent basis for the past 4 years. In fact I almost bought a black one too so until I saw one and found it incredibly ugly.

My 28mm summicron asph v1 has hardly had a look-in since I bought the sumnaron.  I think Leica for once stayed true to their original ethos with this lens.  It’s as sharp as a razor and has a recognisable character which I really like.
My film choices are based on the qualities  of the prevailing light, I find Portra 400 is ideal for outdoors work in the cooler light we mainly have in the UK.   For this my recent trip to Egypt, it was actually our Honeymoon, I decided to use Ektar as the light is so intense unless it is dusty.

The only mild annoyance to me is the 34mn filter thread, but that is a minor gripe.
The 28mm summaron-m is a  great lens.  One of Leica’s best of the current M lenses in my opinion.  Put it with a 50mm elmar-m f2.8 and a 90mm macro elmar-m and you have an almost perfect  set of compact lenses for travel.

Rigorous framing is possible with this tiny 28mm

Old lenses, no matter how well looked after, are likely to suffer dust and haze. These are natural products of age, although many can't/do not want to see them. The latest has better coatings and is 6-bit coded (only relevant to digital Leica's). The original was of course only made in screw-mount so would need an adapter to use with M mount. What is the possible advantage of the 'original' if you don't already own one?

It's a wonderful lens with a very special rendering, and the colours on digital sensors are lovely (saturated).

As Leica only produces the Summaron 5.6-28mm with M-bayonet, the only reason to purchase an old M39-Summaron would be using a screw mount Leica.
I gave up searching for a clean old exemplar without haze, dust or even fungus.
An experienced Leica technician warned me to ask for service for such a dirty old Summaron 28, as he wouldn't be able to center the tiny lenses exactly.
Prices for old M39-Summarons are somewhat high, especially if including the old lens hood.
Therefore a new M-Summaron 5.6-28 should be the better choice for all M-Leicas.

I do have the new one and two old ones cla'ed at Paepke's in Düsseldorf, Germany, and at Leica's in Wetzlar respectively. The first one had to go to Paepke's as Leica Service refused to check it arguing that they couldn't assume no liability as they do not have spare parts any more, but they actually did clean the second one only a little later without hesitating.

Both old ones are centered as the new one is, and I do not have any problems with haze, dust or fungus. Of course I do need an adapter to use the old ones on newer cameras.

Pictures actually do look alike. I feel confirmed as Leica say, that the new one is the same lens inside as the old ones were, adding only the new bayonet and changing some measures. I guess you could even use the lens correction data of the new lens in pp for the old ones - if you wanted to correct them at all which from my point of view does not make sense: When you choose the lens because of its natural vignetting for example, you will hardly have that re-done in post, won't you?

Six-bit-coding is being overrated definitely: You can choose any lens profile using the menu as well - if you want to use one at all.

Only thing with the old lenses is that the magnification does not work when focussing using live view with the older lenses on newer cameras.

Interesting indeed. I would have sweared that the new lens has more acutance and less flare than the old one but i have no experience with either.

I didn't use much the old LTM Summaron 2.8cm, but appreciate it so when Leica launched the new Summaron-M 28mm, I was pleased to be able to purchase new.

In Leica 's lens presentation, we can read :

[ ...

Its unmistakable signature is almost impossible to reproduce by digital means and makes the lens a true classic; reborn today in a revised edition with identical optical properties.

The fact that this is no simple reconstruction is obvious at first glance: the design of the Summaron-M has been refined down to the essentials, without losing any of the character of its legendary ancestor.

That of course is written by the marketing dept. They are hardly going to write "Its unmistakable signature is a cinch to reproduce by using a free LR preset..."

Maybe not first attempt to remake this lens.

In Wiki, ( this page ) strange that Leitz manufactured in 1971 , 50 units of Summaron 2.8cm in M mount (bracketted M) , I think but I may be wrong:

1875001 1875500 Summaron 2.8 cm 1:56 1961 500
2279751 2279800 Summaron 2.8 cm 1:56 (S) 1968 50
2499101 2499150 Summaron 2.8 cm 1:56 (M) 1971 50
TOTAL ASSIGNED SERIAL NUMBERS 1954-1971

If you are assuming that, what does (S) mean. I think factory used thread mount description.

I think someone would have posted here if any in M mount from the original batches exist.. Leica say non were made, and  I read it was because the Canadian 28mm Elmar was about to be launched they cancelled plan for M mount..

Six bit coding is lazy way of getting correct EXIF data.

Can't understand why magnification dosn't work. Interesting to know reason. Leica do not suggest anywhere this is the case with older lenses as far as I know.

With all the talk about the Summaron 28, I can't resist re-posting my favorite pictures with this lens, now with the larger files sizes permitted by the forum. The first three are "no finder shots", holding the camera at chest level and pre-focusing.
