fredus Posted October 4, 2016 Share #1  Posted October 4, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi there!  I've just received my brand new 35mm Summicron ASPH and found the hood quite bulky for my taste. I have 2 questions:  - Would there be some smaller replacement hood I could use? - If I were to go without a hood, what do I need to be able to fit a regular lens cap?  Thanks for your help and advises!  Fred

Michael Geschlecht Posted October 4, 2016 Share #2 Â Posted October 4, 2016 Hello Fred, Â Welcome to the Forum. Â Enjoy your new lens. Â Before dismissing the lens's shade as "quite bulky": Please keep in mind that the primary purpose of a rigid lens hood is to protect the lens elements & the lens mount from damage because of inadvertent impact, etc. Â It is much easier to put back a lens hood that "pops" off while absorbing the energy from a knock against something or from something or to replace a damaged lens hood instead of replacing a lens element or a lens's focusing mount. Â And protecting against flare in some situations can also be a secondary benefit. Â Best Regards, Â Michael
fredus Posted October 4, 2016 Author Share #3  Posted October 4, 2016 Thanks for the quick answer Michael! I understand the benefits of a hood, just want to understand my option. Ultimately, I would want a smaller hood. Would any previous edition of the 35mm Summicron hood fit the new version?
tobey bilek Posted October 4, 2016 Share #4  Posted October 4, 2016 Thanks for the quick answer Michael! I understand the benefits of a hood, just want to understand my option. Ultimately, I would want a smaller hood. Would any previous edition of the 35mm Summicron hood fit the new version?  The round vented hoods are for 35 and 50 mm lenses.  To use it there must be a recess for the clips.  My ASPH came with a rectangular clip on similar to 35 2.0 IV.   I will not buy any of these new designs with the bulky shades.  We got away from these in 1970.  Why bring them back. Stealth3kpl Posted October 5, 2016 Share #5 Â Posted October 5, 2016 I bought something like this which I stuck on my 50 summicron mk5 and it's great. See if there's one for a 35. This might be suitable for a 35. Pete
lct Posted October 5, 2016 Share #6  Posted October 5, 2016 I have no experience with the current 35/2 asph but you might wish to try the hood of the current Elmarit 28/2.8 asph eventually. They look very similar at first glance (pic) but i have no experience with the current 28/2.8 asph either sorry. The regular Leica E39 plastic lens hood is # 14038 but i have not tried it on the current 35/2 asph. Antonio Russell Posted October 12, 2016 Share #10 Â Posted October 12, 2016 I would be interested to see any pictures of the new lens/hood setup if any owners would be kind enough to post some. I foolishly let my 35 Cron V go a few years ago as I moved to the 50mm focal length and am now badly missing the 35 and not sure whether to go for the Cron V or VI
