scott kirkpatrick Posted February 28, 2019 Share #802 Posted February 28, 2019 Yes. Also on en.leica-camera.com . I don't yet see the technical specs with those awesome MTF's. The embargo must have ended at 9 am NY time, or something like that. There are multiple versions of some details. The text on the website talks about having 1 aspherical element (out of 13 in 11 groups). The drawing shows 3. I've seen another memo that has 5 aspherical elements. Two separately moving elements for autofocus. Minimum focus distance either 0.3 m or 0.27.

A little down on this page, the optics is described; it appears like there are (at least) two different types of aspherical elements used, possibly explaining the different numbers of Asph elements: http://en.leica-camera.com/Photography/Leica-SL/SL-Lenses/Prime-Lenses/APO-Summicron-SL-35. scott kirkpatrick Posted February 28, 2019 Share #804 Posted February 28, 2019 (edited) Here's the puzzling statement of one element -- one of which is an aspherical lens for the correction of monochromatic aberration but that could mean that one of them is for spherical aberration and the other two are part of making the purple fringes go away forever (as in the interview that Thorsten Overgaard wrote up). I see that Leica is listing three filters, including a ND for the folks who like their seawater smooth and foamy. Since these Summicrons now come in a standard size, that may not be a new thing. verwackelt Posted February 28, 2019 Share #805 Posted February 28, 2019 Yes and all elements together reduces the money in our pockets to zero… The price on German website is 4400 €. It is a lot of money, but compared to the 50 Apo summicron M it is a bargain… 😉
Guest Posted February 28, 2019 Share #806 Posted February 28, 2019 (edited) According to the press release which has hit various sites (example below), the 35mm lens will be available in April, in the UK at least, so I don't think the Leica Rumours site is correct. https://www.photographyblog.com/news/leica_apo_summicron_sl_35_mm_f_2_asph_l_mount_lens Edited February 28, 2019 by Guest
grahamhoey Posted February 28, 2019 Share #807 Posted February 28, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) Pricing on B and H is USD 4,595. According to both them and Leica Miami coming in about 4 weeks.
Agent M10 Posted February 28, 2019 Share #808 Posted February 28, 2019 "The apochromatic optical design uses anomalous partial dispersion glass to suppress color fringing and chromatic aberrations for high clarity and color accuracy, and five aspherical elements are also featured to reduce spherical aberrations for improved sharpness." Holy Moly.
verwackelt Posted February 28, 2019 Share #809 Posted February 28, 2019 I hope Leica will soon release a camera that can benefit from that resolving power and correction of the aberrations of the lens…
Chaemono Posted February 28, 2019 Share #810 Posted February 28, 2019 We all know well that the Q2 with 47 MPx is coming next week and that portends well for the release of an SL that can benefit from the resolving power and correction of aberrations of the Summicron-SL lenses. To compare with the, say, EUR price (4400 EUR including VAT) you need to subtract VAT and add 100 EUR or more for shipping to the US. That is 3700-3800 EUR, which is still a bargain if you can find one or get one while travelling and save the shipping (US doesn't have customs duties on still cameras, as yet). IkarusJohn Posted March 15, 2019 Share #812 Posted March 15, 2019 The thought that the 35 Summicron is diffraction limited, or near as not, is truly impressive. I’m more of a 75mm fan, but having the 50 Summilux-SL would make that addition rather pointless .. I’ll wait for a nice fast medium telephoto prime, I think. APO-Elmarit-SL 180/2.8 ASPH will do nicely. With image stabilisation, if that’s okay. I want something reasonably compact (not a ridiculous Summicron 180 - the R version was beyond hand holding). No, I had a Nikon 180/2.8 once, and it was lovely. An SL version would be just fine.

The only caveat is the motor issue. Is the 180mm lens on the roadmap for the SL, I'd be surprised to see IS in any interchangeable prime lens from Leica, it goes against their lens philosophy. Using medium format lens on full frame could be half way towards the weight of APO Summicron R 180mm plus unwanted adaptor. APO Elmarit R 180mm is one relatively compact lens for the given FL and weight is just below 1kg.

I don't believe Leica has made a poor 180mm, my older non apo R Elmarit with scratched (sadly) front element has IQ that far exceeds it's reputation and price. Either way adapters are necessary, the Leica's being the best I've used from a integration standpoint and yet a pain in the derriere at times. I just checked S 180mm is f3.5, for the kind of money you can get at least three Panasonic 70-200 f4, it would be more sensible choice if AF is prerequisite. I don’t mind splashing out but not on behemoths.
caissa Posted March 15, 2019 Share #817 Posted March 15, 2019 And a little later there will be a 2.8/70-200 from Panasonic. That sounds even better ... (probably in 2020, certainly before Leica will offer any long lens.). And Sigma also has a 70-200 that they could convert to L.

Sure, you make a good point but the subject is 180mm, both you and I don't know what IkarusJohn requires, currently the 180S is the only 180mm Leica lens that can be used with AF on the SL. IkarusJohn Posted March 15, 2019 Share #819 Posted March 15, 2019 (edited) I did have the ROM version of the APO Elmarit-R 180/2.8 some time ago, and very good it was too. The 90-280 zoom is very good, but ... large. My point is more that Leica is duplicating ocal lengths with the M system - I already have excellent primes in 21-28-50-75 focal lengths, so I don’t really need a further SL lens in those focal lengths. For walk about or a trip, the toss up for me is M or SL. If it’s a single lens, I’ll take the 24-90; two lenses, the 16-35 & 50. The big zoom stays at home, save for birding, sports and the like. I’d like to see some good primes 135 and longer. For some reason I can explain, 8 think in traditional terms of 90-135-180. Getting out to 210, 280, 400, 560, the lenses are too big and it”s not the sort of photography I do. I backpacked around the world in my youth for a few years with a mid-rnage prime (28-85?j and a 180/2.8 tele. It was a perfect combination for me. I’d love to see such a lens of the quality of the 35 Summicron-SL in that focal length. PS- not interested in going back to R lenses with adapters and certainly no interest in adapting S lenses. caissa Posted March 15, 2019 Share #820 Posted March 15, 2019 Panasonic will also offer a 2x converter. This is probably the smallest option and the lightest, and the cheapest. (To have a 4/180 together with the SL 90). If the two work together well.
