jaapv Posted September 17, 2016 Author Share #61 Posted September 17, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) Leica will work with whatever company fits the need, but their main cooperation is with Panasonic AFAIK. I do not think they have used Fuji sensors since the original Digilux. They have been sourcing sensors from Sony, Kodak+successors, Sony again, Cmosis/STMicro (independent) and probably Towerjazz (Israel, Panasonic affiliated). Robert M Poole Posted September 17, 2016 Share #62 Posted September 17, 2016 Well if Leica are working with Fuji on this, I wonder if they might be looking at/are using Fuji sensors?I love my Fuji cameras, their lenses are fantastic and the xtrans sensors are fantastic. They don't make full frame sensors though and have stated they have no interest in doing so. Though aren't the sensors made by Sony now? mjh Posted September 17, 2016 Share #65 Posted September 17, 2016 Well if Leica are working with Fuji on this, I wonder if they might be looking at/are using Fuji sensors? If I remember correctly, Fuji has sold its sensor fabs to Toshiba.
Peter H Posted September 17, 2016 Share #66 Posted September 17, 2016 When camera companies like Leica and Fuji buy their sensors from Sony, to what extent can they specify the sensor, or do they buy from a standard list as determined by Sony? There's obviously (or presumably) a lot that goes on over and above the sensor design that produces differences between different camera outputs, but do they start with the same mass-produced sensors or are they custom-built? jaapv Posted September 17, 2016 Author Share #67 Posted September 17, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) It depends, Leica sensors are usually modified at the least. I have heard that they attempted to buy the 240 sensor from Sony, and moved to Cmosis when Sony couldn't (wouldn't?) comply with Leica's specification. The M8/9 sensor was a Kodak offering with a special microlens/filter stack.
stefans4 Posted September 17, 2016 Share #68 Posted September 17, 2016 If I remember correctly, Fuji has sold its sensor fabs to Toshiba. Are they perhaps included in the recent deal Toshiba --> Sony? http://www.sony.net/SonyInfo/News/Press/201512/15-1204E/
mjh Posted September 17, 2016 Share #69 Posted September 17, 2016 When camera companies like Leica and Fuji buy their sensors from Sony, to what extent can they specify the sensor, or do they buy from a standard list as determined by Sony? You can either get an off-the-shelf design or a bespoke sensor – the latter would be more costly of course. Fuji mostly uses custom designs with their own X-Trans colour filter array. As far as I can tell, Leica uses standard issue sensors in their X line, as does Fuji in the X-A models.
mjh Posted September 17, 2016 Share #70 Posted September 17, 2016 Are they perhaps included in the recent deal Toshiba --> Sony? http://www.sony.net/SonyInfo/News/Press/201512/15-1204E/ Could be, but the original deal between Fuji and Toshiba (in 2007 or thereabouts) did concern CCDs only and I’m not sure how relevant these are these days. Cheaper and retro styling blows the Leica badged one away Sent from my E6653 using Tapatalk
plasticman Posted September 17, 2016 Share #73 Posted September 17, 2016 retro styling blows the Leica badged one away You're talking about your own personal taste in design. I find the parody retro styling of the Fuji Instax toy-like and embarrassing: whenever I see it I expect it to shoot water out of the lens like a joke camera. I really like the styling of the Sofort. Maybe strip away just a couple of details and the 70s look could be a Dieter Rams camera.

I find Leica rebranding other companies cameras embarrassing though. Sent from my E6653 using Tapatalk
Michael Geschlecht Posted September 17, 2016 Share #75 Posted September 17, 2016 Hello Everybody, As has been mentioned previously in this Thread: This may be an April Fool's Day joke in September.
