I have my doubts that MF is going to make me a better photographer or make life any easier in the elusive struggle to produce memorable images.

I'm starting to think I should just stick with the Sony A9 for everything.

I can try forget leica and hasselblad.

I don't make my living from photography.

I can afford to allow my heart to overrule my head and choose what I want rather than what I need.

I no doubt have a different set of delusional excuses to justify Leica instead of cameras that are clearly better and more feature rich than some others folk on the forum ......  :D

+1

This is also the reason why I have sold the A9 and will be getting the SL back this week!

Those SONY menues are horrible.

I had absolutely no fun when I was out with the A9.

Preferred to use my old M8 most of the time!

+1 My delusional excuse is that I enjoy using tools that are more than just adequate or efficient, but really do their work well, and push me to do mine to the same standards.  As a result I have also a few cameras or lenses that do things that Leica has not chosen to offer yet.

It's good with options, and I guess all of the top-end-systems deliver in many/most respects. After huge technical and optical advances over the past decade or so, we - or the industry - are in the transition towards diminishing returns. Yes, we will see more pixels, higher dynamic range, better af, etc., but for most of us, the existing systems are already very, very fine. Leica is typically not in the lead regarding tech specs, so there will always be something 'better' out there. Not in all respects, but for many tech specifications. Presently, Leica lags on the medium format front, and gradually on a pro-system like SL. And on af. But I expect this will change with updated/upgraded sensors and processors, sometime this year or in 2019. At the same time, the major players will also advance. But with diminishing returns.

Regarding the fun part - as stated by thigslapper, John, Scott and others - nothing beats my feelings for M9 (my first digital body) and the SL, and the Leica lenses in general. Nikon D850 is a fine machine, certainly. But it's not an instrument like a perfectly calibrated M-body, or the SL, for that sake.

I tried that. Sold nearly all my Leica gear and went searching......

Couple of years later and I have more Leica gear than ever. Sometimes I need something Leica doesn't offer but every time something falls within the Leica shooting envelope that's what I choose. I actually like my A7R3 (unlike most prior Sonys) and I think the X1D has real mojo. But if a mirrorless S008 and a 40MP SL comes out I know where I'll end up.

I'm just vert fortunate I can have multiple systems.

I said to my wife this morning I'd put all my Leica on ebay to take advantage of the £1 fixed sale fee.

She wasn't happy.. she knows what I'm like and tells me I shouldn't sell anything, not for a while. So since this morning I have changed my mind, or at least seen sense enough not to list my Leica just yet :)

I think most people here following your journey would have told you the same thing - but we don't have your wife's opportunities!

When I proudly showed to my wife the first (really good) images that I had taken with the A9, her answer was "but these are not Leica pictures".

I do not see this, but others do :-(

John

Did she mean composition/subject matter or rendering?

Regarding 100MP and the X2D, they will have to break down and pay to develop an ASIC. Leica paid Fujitsu for the Maestro. Hasselblad will need to do something similar.

I still find full frame cameras much better for general use than medium format.

There are two common MF digital sensor formats apart from leica S 30x45mm; Smaller 33x44mm and larger 40x54mm.  Currently 33x44mm sensors found in Pentax, Fuji and X1D are 50Mp, while Phase one and upper echelon HB camera backs have bigger sensors with various pixel densities.  I believe expectation is for 33x344mm sensor to be given 100Mp upgrade in not so distant future.

i wonder if the new 100mp sensor will even fit in the X1d body....

one can see the basic size difference 'tween 50mp and 100mp at 1:15 in the video

I have both, the SL and the X1D, both as a pretty much complete system. Sold my M10 plus some M lenses to finance the Hasselblad. No regrets. Kept the  15 Distagon, 21 Summilux, 50 Noctilux though. I use the SL for work and speed. X1D for stills, walkaround, landscape and architecture. Absolutely amazed by both systems. If I had to choose one: I would never let go the SL … and the 15 Distagon.

Which 15 Distagon; ZM or SLR version - ZE or ZF.2?
