Is Leica really behind Sony in sensor technology?

Sony is a sensor builder, Leica a sensor buyer - with very specific needs. Leica will buy Sony sensors when they fit - Digilux2 - X-series - T.

When there is another, better suited sensor for the purpose available Leica will order that one - SL, Q. When nobody, including Sony, can supply the sensor they need, Leica will have it developed by a third party - Leica M240, or modified - M8,M9,Monochrom.

So Leica has no position in sensor technology other  than as a market party.

Who cares? One way or the other, both companies make good cameras.

I get better photos with my Leica M and R lenses on a Leica body (M-P, SL) than I ever did fitting them to a Sony body (A7). And the Leica bodies have more than satisfactory dynamic range, resolution, and sensitivity to meet my needs. That's all that matters to me.

Everybody is behind Sony's sensor (and firmware) technology.

Then why do Sony sensors tend to function better in Nikon cameras than in their own offerings?

Nikon does a lot of their own sensor design, particularly on the high-end models, and shops the production to Sony's fab. That's how the Nikon camera division CTO described the process in a Photokina interview a few years ago.

If you mean that tech specs of sensors in Leica flagship cameras are inferior to tech spec's of Sony flagship sensors, then yes. But somehow Leica uses the sensors it buys to make better cameras overall. Of course, there is room for improvement, for example in noise.

If you are in the business of selling/buying sensors, stick to Sony, if you are taking pictures, I would stick with Leica.

Is the same company that produced the M240 sensor still producing and developing sensors for the Leica brand?

I wonder if if the new Leica sensor is not already part of its offering and we can see what we will get at Photokina where I presume Leica will want to steal the show from canon and Nikon.

In the limit this would be a sensor that makes all pixels mid-grey irrespective of the scene being photographed  :p

Curious to see what they do with this.  The mechanical shutter is going to be an anachronism quite soon.

Yes i don't use mine anymore in most cases with my A7s mod. I'd dream to have the same sensor as the latter's in my M240. Or more simply the whole Sony innards plus the Leica RF and 6-bit correction. The next M should fill the gap soon or late hopefully.

Producing, I guess yes, as the M240 sensor has at least a decade to run yet. As for developing, who knows. On their website they only offer a 20 MP and 70 MP fullframe sensor, neither would hold any interest for Leica, but nobody knows what is being hammered out in backrooms.

Fab houses tend to update their process fairly regularly so I suspect the M240 sensor is already obsolete, or if not very close to being so. Leica would be advised about planned obsolescence and would take a bulk order to cover the run out period to the replace, ent M, and a number for spares based on statistical evidence.

What's a fab house? It sounds exciting but I guess it's where sensors are made.

I hope I'm wrong.

Fabrication. For the rest of us to lazy to spell it all out ('cron? really?) or used to silly acronyms tossed around at the workplace, fab.....

Sorry, thought everyone was au fait with Fab in relation to integrated circuit manufacture, it is certainly the case within the electronics industry.

Incidentally, I hope you're not being lazy by omitting the letter 'o' when spelling too. :)

I'm not familiar with Fab in any connection other than Thunderbirds.

So, is Sony a Fab House?
