I find the OPs question very natural... If yellow and orange is clearly observed, it is only a natural assumption that there is a difference between the two lenses...

 

The assumingly right conclusion made by the very competent bunch on this forum that it is about fading or white balance in a picture does not change the logic in OPs question.

But it isn't about fading and it isn't about white balance except in one instance above where the yellow should be orange.

 

It isn't about the colour either, it's about whether the different colours (and there are two distinct colours that have been used for the markings: red and orange) denote different versions or iterations of the lens, which is a more material matter for some than cosmetics.

I'd have thought that knowing the serial numbers of both of the potential lenses for purchase might settle the debate more quickly and reliably than a debate over shades of paint on the lens barrel.

 

Not an unreasonable question to ask either seller, and if that possible delay means missing the purchase, these are far from rare secondhand.

Hi and thanks Peter. And I guess I know this...  I just felt that OP maybe didn't... and by that that the question would have benefitted from a slightly different respons... but that is just me

I would not be surprised if the exact shade of orange/yellow depends on the tin of paint used by the assembling technician - or the grade of sweat from the user's fingers.

Sorry, I didn't follow the thread.

The one with yellow letters have 4217699 production number.

The one with orange letters have 4201564 production number.

I don't know if this helps.

None of yellow or orange numbers can pertain to either black paint or black chrome lenses so both copies appear to be regular black anodized 35/2 asph lenses from 2013 or 2014. See http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-wiki.en/index.php/35mm_f/2_ASPH_Summicron-M
