Mandler: Lux 75 VS Cron 90, legend or reality ??

I agree with almost everything you said, warrior, and I never implied something different. However, I don't think it's "creating another reality" if you remove a couple blemishes from a person's skin - after all, they're there for a day or two, then they'll be gone in reality. Do you really want to remember a blemish for the rest of your life?

Also, your street portraits are amazing! I just think you could get exactly the same results with the APO Summicron, you might just need to develop them a little differently to get exactly the same result.

To me they are living images in this 3D, but the ASPH lenses that have lost, in my opinion.

I fully agree - there is a reason why Mandler lenses have such a strong following (I believe there are even a few threads just for discussing those).

My favorite Mandler lens will always be the 50/1 of any version - these are wonderful lenses.

I like though what you do with the longer focal lengths, which do not make the more intimate contact with your subject a necessity as say a 50mm lens.

I really prefer to be a bit closer, hence my liking of the 50mm and 75mm.

I find also (maybe due to my preference) the 50/1 to be more consistent then either the 75 and 90mm when it comes to focussing at big apertures.

In any case the Mandler lenses truly have a certain quality that is indeed lost in the later lenses as the 50/.95, 75/2 and 90/2 ASPH which may be optically superior lenses yet loose that natural beauty in the images.

Here is a wide open shot with the 75/1.4 on the M8.2 at close up distance.

The lens is not a soft lens - the detail is all there - but look what the 75mm does to the skin (the JPG conversion and mangling through flickr's algorithms doesn't help it though).

This is something I did not find in the 90/2 pre ASPH, which looks a bit less … missing the right word here:

Musotographer, you should not have GAS, just out into the street with your favorite team and make good pictures :D

I'm used to the 50mm ASPH Pre-E46 BP Mandler from 5 years ago, but now with the E55 90mm f2 have found that many years ago I lost my selling 75 lux VII of Mandler.

I have always photographed people very close, with 50mm 1 meter and 75 and 90 from 1.5 meters.

I feel comfortable at that very short distance, there are many people who use telephoto lenses to shoot from 5 meters or more and then cut the image is afraid to approach the faces of people on the street, a smile is only necessary or a gesture so that people do not put problems.

It is bad to hide, or hide the camera, because it seems that the photographer is hidden because it does something wrong, or because photography will allocate for evil.

But fear to stand in front of people on the street is big and it is hard to beat.

Lux 75 seems like a very clean lens when treated with light, 90mm is very close but I find the 90mm pre-ASPH E55 is better because it has that right touch of honey to the skin and people, in my opinion the 90mm is not preferred for the master Mandler because maybe it is not as short as 75 design.

In my opinion the lux 75 has more balance between DOF and closeness to the individual to f2, I also think it is unpoco more sharpness when open.

I do laboratory tests, only I pictures on the street and is the only way to see how lenses work, I do not care lines per millimeter or other stuff, just the results.

There is a very important thing to say about the use of any equipment by the photographer, the human being is not a machine, human beings have emotions and tastes, the human being has a predilection for things that maybe are not examined under the microscope they are just things we like some more than others by CIRCUMSTANCES we can not explain very well.

If I do not feel comfortable with the equipment I use will not get the same results, good or bad, that with the team that I do feel comfortable.

The ASPH lenses in general, except the Noctilux f0,95, I do not like, and if I'm not happy with something I can not work well with it.

ASPH lens can cost much more than a pre-ASPH lens, but the results are not satisfied with me, I speak with rigor because I have had.

The APO 90mm ASPH was in my backpack just one week ........

50mm ASPH two months ......

The 28 Cron ASPH, the Lux 35, the 21mm ASPH, 75 f2 ASPH, and all have flown.

I sold the f0,95 because it's big and I'm afraid to hit him, that would be a great disappointment, I sold the f0,95 because it's big and I'm afraid to hit him, that would be a great disappointment, I am not rich to break this goal and go for another later.

It's hard not to sound hyperbolic but for me the 75mm Summilux is one of the greatest lenses of all time. Wide open it's sublime, I mostly shoot it a f2-2.8 where it balances the incredibly beautiful and unique rending with great sharpness and is more forgiving on focus as the depth of field is brutally thin - thinner than the Noctilux. Then, stopped down to f8 it's one of the sharpest lenses I have found - so it's a very versatile lens. It's sharpness stopped blows me away and you will be pressed to find another sharper (in a very natural way) that exists in any lens, of any brand. The colour is not as accurate as the modern lenses but the palette is again, something I find incredibly beautiful, being more soft and leaning more towards the cyan side. It can be mostly corrected to match the modern lenses. I consider it, with my Noctilux as the best ever lenses and with the 35mm Summilux part of what I would IMO describe as Leica's Holy trinity.

I completely agree with you about the 75 Summilux and I especially love the colouring.

I consider the 75 Summilux a better corrected and more intimate 1.0/50 Noctilux.

Which version 35mm Summilux do you mean, v2 or the very pricy Aspherical?

I recently acquired the 50 AA, I've started using it on my MM as well as M9p, I tend to shoot 50's and have a bunch from an old Summarit 1.5 to the 0.95 nocti and I enjoy them all. Wont get rid of my 50 cron V4 although I said I would when I got the AA.  Still seem to love the Mandler lenses.  As for the 75 1.4 and the 90 2.0 E55, I also have them and they are truly magical.  I will admit that the 90 gets rarely used, but I should use it more.  Going from the 50 0.95 to the 75 1.4 and the 90 2.0 is to me a natural progression.  I like the 75 since I don't have to get too close as Menos pointed out.  The last few times I've pulled a 90 out it was an old thin TEM 90 2.8 that is fun and light for day work.

I will have to take the 90 2.0 for a walk again one of these days.  Every once in a while I mount something like the 75 1.4 to "force" me to use it in a number of situations.

Musotographer, you should not have GAS,

I'm afraid GAS doesn't always give you the option - it creeps up behind you out of the blue, grabs you and doesn't let you go, unless you have a will of iron.

I have the Lux 75 and find it magical, but I didn't know about the Cron 90 E55 and it clearly produces pictures with almost as much fairy dust. I thought I was happy and safe from GAS with my Tele-Elmarit 90 thin, but I can feel the danger approaching.....  :)

Hi to all

And I have enjoyd reading through the comments/views on the Mandler 75 Lux and 90 Cron.

while I am not a big user of 75/90s, I do own a 90 Elmarit last version (my only 90 or 75 ever... So far). And I hope I do not destract too much from OPs asking by asking how my 90 Elmarit "compare" with in particular the 90 Cron (also being a Mandler lens I believe...)?

regards

Yes both Mandler lenses. The 90/2.8 v2 is a bit sharper than the 90/2 v3 especially on edges and corners and has less vignetting and CA. A flawless lens a bit softer than the 90/2 apo but not by much.
