I am stumped about removing a lens shade

I have an older summilux with a square lens shade.  I bought it used and, until now, have never tried to get the lens shade off.  It has two tabs on the side.  I have tried pushing in the tabs and screwing CCW; pushing in and unscrewing, pushing tabs and pulling--and it won't budge.  Frankly, I don't want to put too much pressure on it because I am afraid of snapping it.  If this was an intelligence test I failed miserably.  Help, please!

Tabs typically control little inserts which go into grooves around the ring. Screwing is of no avail. It sounds as if perhaps some aren't fully retracting. I suggest just exercising them a little...perhaps even lightly heating them with the air from a hair dryer. Then trying to fully depress the tabs. Here's an example from a hood I have.

When faced with something that sticks I usually try a tiny drop of very light lubricant (WD40) or a quick silicon spray. You might want to mask the front element of the lens before doing either of these. (Also please note that silicon spraying should be done outside in the fresh air with the wind behind you.)

Given this situation, I think you may want to get a can of Aerokroil http://www.amazon.com/Kano-Aerokroil-Penetrating-aerosol-AEROKROIL/dp/B000F09CEA/ref=sr_1_2/190-7060019-5079530?ie=UTF8&qid=1459115625&sr=8-2&keywords=kano+kroil+penetrating+oil

In another room - well away from your lens - spray some Aerokroil into a bowl. Now you apply the Aerokroil to the base of the hood release tabs (which have been oriented to the (9:00 and 3:00 o'clock positions to keep the oil from trickling down onto your lens) using a plastic toothpick or plastic sword like bartenders use to skewer chunks of fruit to put in cocktails or something similar made of plastic.  A wooden toothpick will likely just soak up the Aerokroil.  Once the release tabs have been lubricated, let the Aerokroil penetrate for about 30 minutes.  After that, try depressing the tabs and moving them around side to side as much as they will move.

This should break loose your stuck lens hood releases.  If not, repeat the procedure again.  It is important to use the oil sparingly and to keep it off the lens as it will penetrate into the lens if it is allowed to get to the mechanics of the lens or the front element.

Never seen a square hood with tabs on a Summilux 35 pre-asph so far. Do you have a Summilux 35 "asph" or "aspherical" lens? If so you might have a 12588 (left) or 12589 (middle) hood. If you have a 12589, don't forget to turn the locking ring to remove it.

Yes, a 12589 is the only hood that I can imagine fits the OP's scenario. I seem to recall when I owned this lens that the hood was sometimes a little awkward to remove (or put back on – can't remember which).  :D

The locking ring was my first thought too - I recently acquired a 35mm Summilux pre-FLE with the 12589 hood, and found removing it to be quite a challenge until I figured out the locking ring.

(Was a bit shocked at the suggestions to try light heating or WD40, which I might try on a reluctant bolt on my motorbike but not anywhere near my Summilux! ;) )

so its not a 35mm pre aspherical with the Summicron hood like this-

As it should have this-

If it is the first one see if it turns it should as the lens doesn't have notches to stop it turning and if it turns that tell you something has been added ie glue etc.
