When you finally get around to holding one, you may also want to read a few dozen threads and reviews.

Neil, you're surely not going back to the M? It's so last century  :p

The thing is Mark....I miss the M, I miss taking pictures with the M, I miss going out with the M wrapped around my neck. Its not that the M took better pictures than my Sony or Nikon or Leica S its how it felt in my hand, the sound of the shutter and just everything about it that I miss. I miss folks coming up to me and asking me what it is, I miss the smell of the Arte Di Mano half case...........are you getting my drift????

The Q kind of fills some of those gaps but not all of them.

With out a doubt I will buy another M in Quadraphina, and in the meantime may even buy a SL after I get to play with my mates SL in 2 weeks time. The only thing that is bugging me about the SL is the lack of SL lenses and the fact that its ugly. Maybe Arte Di Mano make a half case for it to brighten her up :) :) :)

Indeed. I feel your pain.

Neil, I seriously advise you to buy an M as soon as you can, so that you can get the maximum enjoyment from wondering (for about 45 minutes) whether to chop it in for the new version that will be out later in the year, or keep it as back up to your Q, or SL, or S, or new M.

Neil, I have to say you do initiate some entertaining threads :)

Whilst picking up my Q from the dealer I had the opportunity to handle the SL + 28-90mm combo and the 2kg coupled with the bulk of the lens makes it an absolute non-starter for me.  Having made the change from 5DMkII & collection of L lenses to Leica in late 2009 for weight (and size) reasons, the last thing I would consider now is the SL + attendant zooms.  If AF is high on your list of priorities I would suggest waiting to see what the next iteration of the M (or whatever the next Leica might be) brings before making a decision.

In the meantime, continue to enjoy the Q - I certainly am!

The sizes and weights are not that all different as between the SL and M.   The SL autofocus 24-90 is very large and heavy but using M lenses, as I do most of the time, is not that different in portability.   Since I have the SL in January I have not used the M much, which was a surprise to me.  (The M is with 35mm Summilux and the SL with 50mm APO Summicron).  The M also has the multifunction grip.

Thanks for the pictures Alan

Like I think i mentioned earlier, my mate in KL is going to let me play with his (that just doesn't sound right) SL when I get home and I will find out for myself if I like it or not. Just a thought, why would one use M lenses on a SL when the primary function of the SL is AF. Is it just because the lack of SL lenses or is it for something else??

Just curious

I use the Q more than the S as it is small and easy to use.........my S is also very easy to use but its like a brick to walk around with

I've just read another thread on the SL and I think I will just wait and see if a new M comes out in Quadraphina in Sepetember :)

Sorry Neil, I just have to remind you of this quote you posted when you announced your switch from M to S system and some suggested you migh find the S a bit too big as an everyday camera..........

"Not sure of your age or your build but I am 6' 3' and built like a brick sh{t house so I cant imagine it being too heavy..........going by actual numbers its no heaver than a D4s with 70/200 f2.8 and I have lugged that puppy around for a whole week along with a D800 and 24mm f1.4 hanging off a spider without breaking sweat...........horses for courses so they say  :) :)"

Yes, we are all allowed to change our minds, yes we learn by experience etc. etc., but it is a funny you have to admit!

Hi,

-do you use mainly lenses 75mm and shorter

-do you like rangefinder

-is compact size important to you

=> buy a Leica M

-do you want to use zooms as well

-do you plan to also shoot tele longer 135mm?

-do you want/need AF

-are you patient waiting for native AF lenses

buy Leica SL (if you like EVF) or another DSLR (if you prefer optical viewfinder)

The SL has the advantage you can also use it as a backup for the S, and you could use some of the S lenses on the SL (if it makes sense)

I love the M for 35 and 50mm rangefinder-shooting.

Very different cameras, depends what you want/need.

As soon as you put native AF lenses on the SL its not much smaller than the S-System.

James I've gotten older since writing that BS.........The S is a Brick to walk the streets with and try shoving that puppy in a Nigerians face and say cheese...............

The Q is perfect and my new M that I will get in quardrafina will be a nice camera to take out as a backup to the Q :) :) :) :)

Not that much older! :)

I did seriously consider a few times about selling all my 35mm gear* and just going medium format buying a Hasselblad or possibly a newer Rolleiflex - neither is particularly big or heavy, but I just wondered if I'd really want that carry that bulky a camera with me all the time.

And there is the perception of subjects too as you point out, which can be very important these days - a Leica M (or Q) especially is not seen as a 'threat' in the way that some people (security 'guards' in particular) see a DSLR or MF camera.

Here's my advice:

If you don't like lugging around the D800 or the S, then sell them. What's the use for a camera you don't take with you?

Then, if you want other focal lengths than 28mm, buy the M and lenses you want. (No, not a Noctilux! And you probably don't need an APO 50 either...)

Then take pictures and keep doing that.

I have only one pair of running shoes and I like it. I do however have two (!) 35mm M-lenses, and I almost think I'm nuts because of that.

Sometimes I'm starting to think there's a bunch of parody accounts around here. But I'm never quite sure.

It is easy to use M lenses, as the focusing on the SL is quite precise.  I do not consider that the primary function of the SL is autofocus. The autofocus lens is very big and very heavy and while there are times I will use it, I am just as likely to put on some of my manual focus M lenses.  Why, besides to save weight? The EVF is first rate, even better than the Q.   The framing is exact, there is no issue about rangefinder alignment, the sensor is better at high ISOs and has a native ISO of 50, longer exposures are possible, there is a built in diopter, dual SD cards, etc.   You lose, of course, the true rangefinder's ability to see "outside the box".   For street photography that could be important, but for other kinds of work, not so important, at least to me.  You also lose the ability of the rangefinder to see better in both low light and bright light (dynamic range of EVF cannot match an optical VF).  These are all trade-offs, and by no means am I saying the SL is "better" than an M.   It is just different and in some ways complementary, and choice depends on personal preferences.  I am hoping the M to come later this year will incorporate some of the advances of the SL while staying an M.   Frankly, you will not go wrong with either.

I asked an airport security operative if I needed to take my cameras out of the bag for scanning. He took one look at my M9-P and M240 and said "no need, they're not serious cameras"

My Hasselblads used to set them off into panic mode!

I love lugging my D810 and D4s with a 600mm f4 lens when I am on Safari. I love taking my Leica S to a Studio and shooting pretty girls with it. I also like taking my Leica S on Trips with my car......the back seat lugs my S then.

I'm glad you have a pair of running shoes, I'm just curious how you manage to take photographs with a running shoe.............amazing how technology has progressed :)
