Sandokan Posted January 24, 2016 Share #1  Posted January 24, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) http://petapixel.com/2016/01/21/the-lomography-jupiter-3-is-another-classic-soviet-lens-raised-from-the-dead/#more-199794  It seems for the extraordindary price of $649 (compared to the £30 I paid 4 years ago for a Zorki 4K with Jupiter 50mm (but mine might have been the Jupiter 8), Lomo will re-release this lens. The sample images are reminiscent of what I remember getting from mine (strong contrast).
Advertisement Posted January 24, 2016 Posted January 24, 2016 Hi Sandokan, Take a look here "New" Jupiter 3 for LTM. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
menos I M6 Posted January 25, 2016 Share #2 Â Posted January 25, 2016 Christ! You can get a real wartime Carl Zeiss Jena Sonnar 5cm f1.5 LTM for that money! I commend the effort though.
graphlex Posted January 25, 2016 Share #3 Â Posted January 25, 2016 If I still had a Barnack, I'd take a serious look at this new Jupiter.
asiafish Posted January 28, 2016 Share #4 Â Posted January 28, 2016 Old Jupiter 3 lenses are not to Leica specs and often don't focus correctly, not to mention shoddy QC. Â They can be excellent, but it takes work and/or a lot of luck. Â My J3 is a 1963 coated lens that was optimized by Brian Sweeney. Â It is just as good as the magnificent 1937 Sonnar I have that Brian converted from Contax mount using a Jupiter 3 housing. Â This new lens promises to be far bett built with a brass instead of aluminum body and more modern coatings. Â A fair price for what you get. Â i ordered mine yesterday, can't wait to compare to my old Jupiter 3 and ancient Sonnar.
earleygallery Posted January 28, 2016 Share #5 Â Posted January 28, 2016 i ordered mine yesterday, can't wait to compare to my old Jupiter 3 and ancient Sonnar. Â I'd love to see some examples if you can post them up here!
asiafish Posted January 29, 2016 Share #6 Â Posted January 29, 2016 I'd love to see some examples if you can post them up here! Â FedEX says I will have it February 4. Â I'm taking a trip to Korea at the end of February and hope to test the new lens before I go. Â Brian has test shots up at www.leicaplace.com if you want to see it (they are magnificent). friedeye Posted February 1, 2016 Share #7 Â Posted February 1, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) It's a favorite lens of mine. I was lucky; mine came from the Ukraine, cost $250, and has performed flawlessly. But I must say that a modern, brass version that focuses at .7m is very tempting. Â Think I may have to bite. friedeye Posted February 1, 2016 Share #8 Â Posted February 1, 2016 Just off the Lomo site. It seems that the lens is being built in the Zenit factory - same as the original, and is only listed as "metal" construction. Â That says to me aluminum, as in the original lens. Of course, the coatings will be new and the focus distance in .7 -- but I'm not sure it'll be a big improvement over my present J3.
friedeye Posted February 1, 2016 Share #9 Â Posted February 1, 2016 Whoops. Just went to Brian's site. Chrome plated brass. Back on.

vincentim Posted August 21, 2020 Share #11 Â Posted August 21, 2020 Hi, can someone provide a contact or link for Brian Sweeney? I'm interested in acquiring a vintage Jupiter lens for my Leica M8 but couldn't find it. Thanks!

Alberti Posted August 21, 2020 Share #13  Posted August 21, 2020 Try the skyllany shop on ebay. yes the bokeh is gorgeous. But focussing a nightmare (the LTM original on a Leica-M). I wonder if the converted Jupiters (changed lens focussing distance) preserves that 'look'. There are no examples.

Hi Vincent, Brian was here for a while under the forum name brianv but he hasn't been around under that name since 2012. Â He got ticked off with something I believe and left for awhile but rejoined under a different name but I can't remember what it was. Â I think he's left the forum for good now as I haven't seen any posts from him for several years. I note that Brian posted an article on 35mmc in April so Hamish Gill over there might be able to put you in touch. Pete. vincentim Posted August 22, 2020 Share #17  Posted August 22, 2020 Thanks Pete and Ecar. Brian answered me through his Flickr page and recommend I contact Skyllaney, which I did.  Thanks!
01maciel Posted August 22, 2020 Share #18  Posted August 22, 2020 According the the Lomo website it is still out of stock. Does anyone has a clue when the lens will be available?
Alberti Posted August 22, 2020 Share #19  Posted August 22, 2020 There is continually a seller on Ebay that sells the Jupiter-3 new (+), that appears already to be aligned for the Leica distance. It is out of stock, so what the origin of his lenses is I don't know  . . .
Guest Posted August 22, 2020 Share #20  Posted August 22, 2020 (edited) Since the "new" Jupiter 3 ltm is supposed to be manufactured on the same worn-out machines as the old models decades before, I am not at all surprised that two lenses I tested on a Photokina came across as extremely wobbly and imprecise - no useful tool for a Leica.
