anyone with experience with both cameras? on the market, they are about the same price.

With Hawk's factory adapter, it allows very close focus.

I am thinking about digitizing my leica glasses, Summicron 35/2 eight element, Elmar 50/3.5, Summaron 35/3.5. Will they perform well on Sony? I tried them on Leica M8, the image quality is great and 10MP is enough for me, but I hate the 1.33 crop factor. I am used to 35 and 50.

Any thoughts?

I have both cameras (M8.2 & A7s) and the Sony's rendition is indeed close to that of the Leica (including moiré issues) but this is true only because my A7s body has been modified by Kolari Vision. Otherwise i would not have bought into Sony due to smearing problems with wides mainly.

  • 2 weeks later...

I also have both Cameras, M8 and Sony Alpha 7.

Leica-lenses perform well on both cameras, if they are longer than 35mm.

It is better (necessary?), if you close wide angle lenses for one or two stops!

Lenses like Summicron-C 2/40 or Summicron 2/50 works very fine!

I see it as more of an issue about whether or not you want rangefinder focusing.  If that's important than the M8 is the only game in town.   If you don't care, then there are nearly unlimited choices for camera bodies that will accept M mount lenses.  Personally, I have a Fuji X-T1 with an M-mount adapter to go with my M4-P and M9P when I want the features a mirrorless, non-rangefinder body offers.

I purchased an A7 almost as soon as they became available. I sold it about the time I bought my M8.  While I have become used to the M8 shutter noise, the same was not true for the A7. Given that the M8 shutter noise is about the most objectionable thing about the camera, it is trumped by the shutter on the A7.....MHO.

Overall, the A7 was a good camera and allowed the use of all of my legacy manual focus glass. The combination of FF resolution and focus peaking allowed for ease of use and pleasing results. It is hard to criticize the A7 for anything other than the loud shutter.

A7 is nice and small...

Leica lenses that are not too wide work good..but I use a Voightlander 15mm on it with no great issues..

Can put ext tubes on A7 as well as close up adapters..

Right now I'm using a Summitar f2 on it..

I like the fact that it retracts...

Also using the A7 w/Leica BEOON for copying all my old negatives..

The A7 is a very adaptable cam..for not too much dough..

Hello Harry,

Just for fun I spend this weekend quite a few hours doing some casual comparison shots between my Sony A7, Hasselblad Lunar, Leica M8 and Leica X1. My only rangefinder lens is the Zeiss ZM 35mm f2 which I also share with both the Sony and Lunar with an adapter. I also test my Canon 40mm pancake 2.8 and the 50mm 1.4. Even though the Zeiss ZM works fine with the A7 I find the 40mm an excellent rival, I can hardly notice any difference between the Zeiss and the Canon which is very easy to use, focus faster -and much closer- Any advantage of the Zeiss ZM glass -or any rangefinder lens I presume- vs the new Sony-Zeiss AF lenses probably it would be completely subjective.

I bought my A7 like new in 950dlls and $1750 for my Leica M8 also like new. If I have to keep one, it would be the M8 for sure. I use the Sony for stuff in my office but I never take it for personal use, it simply do not invite me to take it with me. And the Leica files...

Get an M9 and be happy!!

Ricardo
