hepcat Posted December 15, 2015 Share #21  Posted December 15, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) Over the years, I have a number of 50mm lenses. The 50mm f/1.5 is an excellent lens and a really good buy.  I particularly liked the Nokton 50mm f/1.5, but ended up keeping the Nokton 50 f/1.1.  The reason I kept the f/1.1 is that you can always stop it down, you can't open up the f/1.5 any further.  I keep thinking about buying another f/1.5, but I really don't have much use for it.  I hear lots of folks complain about "big, heavy" lenses consider the Nokton 50mm  f/1.1 and the 35mm f/1.2 v1 (that I also have) being in that category.  Having once shot a Canon EOS 1 with the Canon 50mm f/1.0 L lens (2.5lbs for the lens alone plus another 2 lbs for the body and battery booster and flash) the difference in weight between the Nokton lenses is negligible.  if I want to go "light" I have an M-mount collapsible Heliar 50mm f/2 that was VERY inexpensive and does a really nice job, but it doesn't come out very often.  I really like the Noktons.  Shelling out the price of a car for a Noctilux isn't even a consideration..  but $700 for a Nokton f/1.1 isn't so unreasonable.  I buy value... the largest aperture I can buy for the best price I can find... and the large-aperture Noktons fit that bill perfectly.  They perform admirably in real-world conditions and  I also like that they have scalloped focusing rings that feel much like the original Summilux and Summicrons.  That scalloped focusing ring just feels right on a lens mounted to an M body. yef Posted December 15, 2015 Author Share #24  Posted December 15, 2015 Never thought that picking a 50mm would be so hard. Ok maybe I should add that now I use the 50 summicron that I love everything about, the only thing is that i really need a faster lens and a nice bokeh.
lct Posted December 15, 2015 Share #25 Â Posted December 15, 2015 Then a Summilux pre-asph is the way to go.

derleicaman Posted December 19, 2015 Share #28 Â Posted December 19, 2015 I own the 50/1.1, the 1st version Nokton 1.5 LTM, the original 50 Lux in chrome and a Zeiss 58/1.5 LTM Jena lens. The Nokton 1.1 is a love/hate type of lens being big and heavy and some people think the broken is harsh or busy. The Nokton 1.5 is an excellent performer and is very inexpensive to boot, but it is big too, although very light for its size. The original Lux set the bar for a 50 speed lens back in the late 50's. Good all rounder, but no match for the current Lux ASPH. The Zeiss Jena is a good lens, but a bit of a odd focal length. A bit soft even when stopped down. Â I have the Canon 50/1.2 LTM lens, which again people love to hate. It is a decent performer, but the bokeh can be a bit harsh wide open. I recently acquired a Zeiss Sonnar ZM. Excellent and interesting lens, with the focus shift wide open being the only drawback. It is fairly easy to learn to deal with this by "leaning in" an inch after focussing. A superb lens. I also acquired a Canon 50/1.4 LTM at about the same time as the Sonnar ZM. This one is a real sleeper. Great bokeh wide open with no focus shift on my MM or M9, and very sharp when stopped down. It is often called the Japanese Summilux with good reason. Much better and more readily available than the original 1.5 version. They can be had for about $ 200 USD on eBay every day of the week. If you want to dip your toe into the fast 50 pond, this would be the smart way to go. The only drawback of this lens is the infinity catch is annoying at times and the lens can suffer from veiling flare with light sources directly in the frame. Make sure to get a good copy with no internal fog and you're good to go. Â I recently shot both the Canon 1.5 and the Sonnar ZM on my MM on a trip to Vegas and am working on a write up the the LHSA journal Viewfinder, which I edit. I'll keep you all posted when the article is is published.

jaques Posted January 4, 2016 Share #32  Posted January 4, 2016 the Canon 50mm f1.2 lens is fast- and relatively affordable. Welcome, dear visitor! david strachan Posted January 28, 2016 Share #33  Posted January 28, 2016 I have that lens too jaques. Not always easy to focus when fully open; heavens knows how the Noctilux photographers focus in street! The Canon is a nice lens, well built and quality throughout. I use it on my M8. cheers Dave S
asiafish Posted January 29, 2016 Share #34 Â Posted January 29, 2016 I would vote for the new Lomography Jupiter 3+. Â At $650 its much more expensive than an old Jupiter 3, but has modern coating, a proper brass body instead of flimsy aluminum, and most importantly it is properly calibrated for Leica and has a modern 0.7 meter minimum focus distance. Â This is a 1930s Sonnar, modernized. Â Carl Zeiss sells their 50mm f/1.5 C Sonnar ZM for double the price, and that lens still has the 0.9 minimum focus distance. Â Brian Sweeney, renowned expert in all things Sonnar has already posted some images with his Jupiter 3+ and they are stunning. Â Mine just shipped from on Wednesday. Â I own the modern Leica 50mm f/1.4 Summilux ASPH and that is of course a "better" lens, but even that great piece of modern Leica design cannot do what a vintage Sonnar does, and this "new" Russian lens is in every way that matters a REAL vintage Sonnar, only without any of the quality issues, flare or calibration issues a 50 to 80 year old lens brings. lct Posted January 29, 2016 Share #35 Â Posted January 29, 2016 Interesting indeed. I have no experience with this lens. Did you have the opportunity to compare it to the ZM 50/1.5?

Not yet, mine is still in shipping, should arrive on 2/4.  I've got an old Jupiter 3 though that is just as good as my 1937 Sonnar and better than the current C Sonnar (imo). farnz Posted January 30, 2016 Share #37  Posted January 30, 2016 I am fortunate to have both a 50/1.5 Zeiss/Jupiter Sonnar that was created by the expert Mr Sweeney from Zeiss and Jupiter parts, and a Zeiss ZM 50/1.5 Sonnar and I think we should be a little careful when comparing the lenses because they are completely different 'paintbrushes' in my view.  A couple of shots to illustrate below.  Pete.  50/1.5 Zeiss/Jupiter Sonnar Welcome, dear visitor!
