I emailed him for info, but he did not respond.

I like his reviews.  They are really informative and have great tips.

It seemed like his lightroom dowloadable class would be of value, but it is significantly more money than anything else that I have seen.

Has anyone gotten his "Lightroom Survival Kit".

Was it helpful?  Is it worth the money?

Thanks,

C

There is a set of instructional  videos on the Adobe site (especially Julie-Ann Kosts) which are very good and free. They cover what you need to know to get started, and if you compliment with Scott Kelby's book, and the miriad of tips within, you will have a great resource  easily available to you. Lightroom is non destructive so just play and learn.

I endorse peaes' comments. Adobe videos are excellent, often in short bursts for easy assimilation. If you run two monitors, you can have the tutorials on one and freeze the video while applying the information to your own image on the other screen. Play back bits you didn't fully understand until you are comfortable with progressing.

Even if you are experienced with LR you will find it worthwhile revisiting the videos and exploring others in the series. You might have to delve a bit for tutorials based on older versions of the software. Try it before you spend money.

I think that Luminous Landscape has now erected a paywall - about $1 per month.  For that you get access to all of their material - including, I think, to their Lightroom tutorials - which are excellent.

My information needs checking but if I am right, then the LuLa subscription is extremely good value.

Right now you can buy the Lightroom class at a discount. I have attended two of his workshops in New York and one as his guest in Toronto. I found them enjoyable, inspirational and I gained a lot of valuable knowledge as well as a good friend. I highly recommend his workshops.

I certainly couldn't contemplate the LR Survival Kit at the cost,, even with 60% off. However, reading Thorsten's very lengthy and in-depth reviews on the various Ms plus the sample of the LRSK and watching the videos he's posted showing is work-flow in action I've managed to assemble a pretty decent and speedy work flow as I don't won't to be tied to the computer for any longer than necessary.

I purchased the LR survival guide some years ago and was let down, especially for the cost. I will clarify that I was looking for more advanced tips and tricks so if you are just starting off with photo editing than you may find Thorsten's survival guide useful. There are many other sources that you will find online for free as mentioned in posts above.

Also, when I had purchased it 4 or so years ago it was already 2 versions of Lightroom behind, which was frustrating. It may have been updated since then.

In general I enjoy Thorsten's articles and website but wanted to provide my thoughts as someone that spent the money and wasn't satisfied.

For things like Lightroom there is no need for a shortcut, don't buy anything since it's the most popular mass-market photography program and a simple YouTube search will result in more information than you would ever need.

You can find reports like this online: "I signed up for his Extension Course class. I got only the first material. For that, I had to remind him. It has been three months that I stopped getting the second and forth materials. I've contacted him through email several times, no response. But, I always get this workshops schedules sent to my email."

I dont want to give any bad comments, since its not my experience nor i know if his trainings are good or bad, but there is thread in dpreview, about how he seem to have scam quite a number of people. I dont know if its true, but many seem very unhappy. If you are in dpreview just do a brief search, i dont know if its against the rules to post the link here...but considering what i read i will be cautious.

Anybody takes bashing posts on DPReview forums seriously?

Yes has to be taken with a grain of salt, but a quick search in google brings some interesting results.... anyways is just for the op to do his research, i dont have anything against TO, I just found his trainings ridiculously expensive for been online, only that :)

I've seen the thread in question, it seems that several people are saying they've paid money for on line courses and not received anything.

Maybe TO doesn't visit dpreview, but I think he should!

The only thing I can say from meeting him  is that he is a nice bloke to have a glass of beer with, and appears to know how to handle a camera. All the rest is hearsay to me.

I can echo Jaap's experience. TO is definitely fun for a beer, and he is a skilled photographer, IMHO. He is quite entertaining.

Having taken his full class, which I would recommend, I can relate that my processing steps are not the same as his. Thorsten would quickly note, with merit, that he processes more images per week than I may in six months...  and he does it at a PROFIT!

Many experienced shooters in our class liked his approach to using Lightroom. If you want to buy something and use it out of the box, Thortsen's product (for which his website offers a discount now, I believe) must be as good as any. On the other hand, if you have a "real camera," an M  :D, why wouldn't you want to spend hours and hours of trial and error to figure it out for yourself? Realize that 90.8% of the options in Photoshop are things you will never use... Just my opinion.
